As noted in my other post about my C96, I have fired it successfully. Now I am wondering about it's magazine capacity. I have seen video of someone loading a real Red Nine and it easily accepting ten rounds from the stripper clip. My pistol was converter to nine from the original 7.63 Mauser. I cannot get more than six or seven rounds of 9mm in the mag, and anything more than 5 becomes quite difficult, and it feels to me like the follower and spring are bottoming out. Did the factory built 9mm guns have changes to the mag or the follower, other than that oblong ball cut that is seen on some 9mm followers? I have three stripper clips that I are reproductions but are NOT the 8 round Steyer Hann clips sold by Sarco. Any clue about what I should check, I have visually inspected the interior of the mag well and see no burrs or other obstructions. Could someone measure the free length of their mag spring follower and floor plate assembly, so I can check if my accordion spring is too long? |

Mauser made a few 6 shot guns but, ther have a visibly short magazine portion of the lower. I'd pull the follower, spring, and floorplate. Once dismounted, I'd nest them together and see if that spring is nearly collapsing up into the hollow of the follower. Also check for dents and modifications. I wonder if you may have an out of spec aftermarket spring in the pistol. |

I pulled the magazine spring/follower/floorplate assembly, disassembled it and then found some photos online of NOS C96s mag springs (NLA) next to a ruler. Mine was significantly longer, like two inches longer. What to do? So I ordered a new spring from Wolff, but in the interim I placed my current spring in a small vice and fully collapsed it. I did not crush it, just ran the vice up till the spring was fully collapsed. I let it sit there for half an hour or so, then removed it from the vice. It was now much closer to the length of the ones I saw online. I reinstalled it and proceeded to load 9 dummy rounds into the mag. Seems I found the issue. I hope the new spring from Wolff will be better. |
