I've got a No4 MK2 Enfield that I'm going to rechamber to 45-70. It's a fairly simple conversion, I've ordered a 5/8" piloted counterbore that I'll have a local sharpening business regrind to 15.5mm (0.610) and open up the forward 3" of the action for rim clearance. I'll make a pilot for the countbore that will fit the bolt raceway for alignment. Sarco sells magazines already converted to 45-70. The problem is how the hell do I fixture the God damn action, Enfields aren't like Remy 700's. Does anyone know of anybody making fixtures to hold Enfields on a lathe or vertically on a milling machine table. The only idea I've come up with so far is to remove the milling machine vice and directly clamp the action to the table vertically. This will probably work, but I'm worried about chatter even though there will be a pilot on the counterbore. The alternative, of course, it to just use a Dremal tool.

When I was making my DeLisle I made a "barrel stub" for the front of the action to run in a steady rest and an arbor that fit the bolt channel for the back that I had a set screw in to drive the action. I had tried a set screw to swell the front of the arbor before going with the allen head set screw. Regardless, I just bored through the stub in the front of the action.  When I was researching how to build mine I had found this image for how someone else had done the same task. I felt how I did it was easier and secured the action better but here's another option for you.  |
