I have a Henry Dark in 45-70, but I may trade it for a Marlin 1895 SBL. Does anybody have any suggestions on a scope for either of these rifles. Maybe a 1-6 power of sorts. So far Vortex has a model I found appealing but I don’t remember the model right off the bat. |

I have a leupold VX2 1.5-4 x 20 extended eye relief on my 45-70. I'm happy with it, it's perfect for elk and deer in the woods I hunt. The VX2 is no longer made, the Leupold Freedom line has a scope with the same magnification and eye relief. |

Athlon 4-16x 40 mildot one in tube You can still use 4x for stalking but having the mil dot reticle allow you to know distance and use the dots for known hold over. Run a ballistic chart in MIL and use dots for hold over at 16x Also note adult deer chest is about 18 in back to brisket. 100 yds 5 mil 166 yds 3 mil 200 yds 2.5 mil 300 yds 1.6 mil 400 yds 1.25 mil 500 yds 1 mil High rings Warne Mountain Tech rings to be above the aperture sight. Marlin shoots a tighter group than Henry. Henry rifles tend to shoot heavy bullets better than light ones at least in the ones I have used. The SBL is almost MOA where the Henry is more like minute of coffee cup. Also with 45-70 if you zero at 200 yds your 100 yd hit will be 5-6 in high If price was no object I’d run a Nightforce 2.5-10. I have run Leupold 2.75 Scout, Vortex Viper 4-16 x44 BDC and Athalon 4-16x 40 Mil the Athalon is the size of most 3-9 scopes and with capped adjustments and a mil dot reticle it’s a solid choice for $200. At Midway etc. |

The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

At Midway etc. LOL what? A 4-16 on a 45-70 lever gun? 200 yard zero? OP ignore this guy, you’re on the right track with a 1-6. I’ve got a Leupold 1-6 on the way for my new lever gun but haven’t even received it yet so obviously can’t recommend it. Lots of decent options on the market though depending on your budget. |

An Emerson mount with a Leupold 2.5x20 looks like a slick setup. I have one of those scopes on an AR, need to get another for a levergun but I think they're discontinued. Aesthetically a black scope on an SBL looks a little off to me. You could try to find one of the silver Leupolds, I don't think they currently make one. |

| A Leopold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x28mm scout scope or a Burris 2.75x20mm scout scope are two that I use on my Marlin 1895 SBL Custom Takedown. I prefer a scout scope with medium high see-through rings so I can utilize my skinner peep sights. The advantage of running a scout scope on this platform or any other lever gun is with the extra-long eye relief, you can maintain both eyes open and utilize your peripheral vision.
