Basically which has the shortest action? Example, RFB 308 has an 18in bbl w 26 in OAL so 8in of action. Largely due to a tilting bolt. If I did my math right?And we had that same ratio , we should be able to get a twenty inches with a twenty six inch overall length w a 5.56. I would consider that absolutely golden. |

If the action is 8 inches, then: 20" barrel + 8" action = 28" OAL, not 26". Are you thinking the action could be shortened even further (to about 6"), which would allow a 20" barrel in a 26" OAL package?? Largely due to a tilting bolt. I don't think the tilting bolt is the main reason the action is so short. The bigger factor is the fire-control layout. There's no trigger pack in the rear—just the hammer. The trigger and sear are located up front, so the rear of the receiver doesn't need to accommodate the full trigger mechanism. |

X95 with a thin buttpad is a fairly short action. 23" oal with flash hider with a 13" barrel, so about 9" of "action" it is shorter in this area than the AUG, WLVRN/MDR and hellion. Rear tilting bolt guns like the RFB can be a shorter action as the cartridge doesn't have to travel thru a section dedicated to locking. Garand based actions are also short, since the bolt locks towards the sides of the magazine opening. A Garand action (ie mini 14) based bullpup could make for a very short 5.56 setup. |
