I'm putting together a SCAR 15 with SC collapsible stock. SBR is factory FN FDEs, stock is black. The buttpad & cheekpiece are a stiff rubber/plastic with slightly different consistencies.  I'll only remove & coat the buttpad & cheekpiece. (Metal parts will stay black.) I'd ruled out Cerakote, as even the C series doesn't like to flex much... So - what do y'all recommend? I was leaning towards Duracoat, as I can airbrush that myself. & I know it'll eventually spider web & crack up anyways, just looking for something a little more resilient than Krylon. I've used oven cure Cerakote (150F for 3hrs) on a handful of the firmer buttpads and they are still holding up. The one that has seen the most use is a little on the softer side and instead of cracking or flaking it has more rubbed off in a way that makes it look worn and dirty. The magpuls with the hard rubber buttpads look mint. I've also done some Hogue rubber grips on an EDC and the customer says they are holding up fine. I always tell people it's not going to last, but with some of them being repeats I've been able to ask how it's holding up and so far so good. You just have to make sure it's free of oil near the surface for bake on finishing. You could use your stove and a pot (and good ventilation!) but I place rubber in a ultrasonic cleaner with simple green heated to 180F and run it for an hour. Rinse off and then bake it completely dry. Sandblast it, and then spray it. A thin coat is what you want. Too thick and it will show cracks and possibly flake. |

Harder rubber in a Magpul SL-K. It’s one of my primary use rifles, and the Cerakote application is an atypical method, but it’s still holding on no issue. Attached File Attached File |
