Thinking about SBRing a Mini14. Want to get it down to the size of a AC556. Anyone do this? If so how was accuracy affected. Thanks in advance |
  I cut my stainless 80's factory folder to the ~13" barrel length of the ac556 and replaced the top of the gas block with a front sight like the ac556 had. So far it's been surprisingly accurate out to 50 yards on steel just with iron sights, although I haven't shot for groups to see what it was. I've got it paired with a dead air naked (stainless finish) nomad which looks awesome together. Many who shoot them suppressed also change our the gas block piston, to control gas, although I haven't. I figure chopping the barrel down by 3-4" and reducing the dwell time is enough. |

Thanks for the response. Been on the fence with this for some time now. Jus scored a Samson blued folder and decided to complete this project now. Ya no is for the pics. Looks great. Did you cut it down to 13” without the muzzle device or is it 13” including the device. |
I had one that I cut back to about 13". It wasn't an SBR, it had a John Masen combo flash suppressor and front sight (the old one-piece version but without a bayo lug) permanently attached. Accuracy improved with the shorter barrel. I had it in a Butler Creek sidefolder:  A friend of mine SBR’d one of his, but I never asked him about accuracy before or after:

I did one - Did the work myself and it shoots great. As it was a GB with pencil barrel I think there is less whip, but with the SBR and Ruger sights, its not a match rifle. You can read about it on this old thread. My Mini-14 SBR Project |

Cherenkov, I appreciate the link. You did a great job on it. Tracking shows that my blued Samson folder should arrive this Sunday. I already had my barrel cut down to 16” with a SureFire suppressor adapter pinned on. I’m going to still want to cut it down a little more to 13”. I will try and get a pic up of it in the Samson when it arrives. |
