In the next month or so, I plan to order or buy a full size MP5 clone, and immediately SBR it, because I’ve always wanted one, and it seems to have the largest variety of furniture options (collapsing, folding, railed, wooden, etc).  Will probably get a suppressor set up on it shortly thereafter.  And I am thinking I want the incorporated top rail, because better optics exist these days that use the 1913 system vs. the claw mount.

Is there a good reason to NOT buy a PTR 9mm of some flavor to scratch this itch?  Quick perusal online yields prices that are in the $1500 range, which also seems to be where the various MAC and MKE options land, but the PTR would at least be supporting a US company.

Is there something I am missing that should steer me in a different direction?

I know the “which one should I buy” topic has been beat to death, but that actually makes it difficult to search.

ETA:  bought a factory SBR w/Timney trigger, now I’m waiting on eforms).

ETA2:  Now with 100% more SBR!

Since I see you’re running yours with ETS mags, do those actually work for the MP5?

Tried them years ago for the AR and Glock, and they functioned like hot garbage.  (IME, YMMV, etc).

My full size PTR-9s are champs and have run smooth as anything else.  I very much recommend those.

My 9KT is a little more temperamental.  I went straight from pistol to SBR so there may be some interplay with the Choate stock and bolt group that’s causing some issues. I do remember the earlier 9KTs had some teething issues so I’m probably going to replace the bolt group in mine with new RCM parts.

ETA - The ETS mags definitely feel cheap and crappy but they have run 100% for me.  I don’t feel like the lock-in is as positive but they’ve been fine at the range.

Felt the same w using a us made one. Never had a mp5 variant and got the itch.  Just got a Ptr 9kt in yesterday.  Put a KES stock on it, Mojave 9 ordered and rare breed frt comes in today.
Going to break it in first then put the trigger in.
Ordered from Atlantic firearms - ended up being 1550 shipped w a couple extra mags

Nope!  I absolutely love mine; soft shooting and a nail driver (suprisingly). Everyone in the family wants to shoot it when we go, and it has never had a failure. It may not "say" HK, but it lives up to it for me.

Are the PTRs known for being picky about stocks, or is that specific to the Choate brand stocks?  Or the CT in particular, rather than the full size?

Will likely buy a collapsing stock, and maybe a complete wooden furniture set for S&Gs.

I had the K sized PTR.

Jams/FTF right out of the box.
BUT customer service was OUTSTANDING!
Paid shipping label and 100% repaired in two weeks.
That’s a great reason TO buy one in my book.

(My POF and my AP5-P both had problems as well but customer service was nonexistent for both of those.
Had to fix them myself.)

I sold the PTR a few weeks before the first Super Safeties came out.
I would gladly have kept it had I known they were coming.

And yes, ETS mags worked in the PTR, my POF, and my AP5-P.
Just tested out two 20 rounders and they were great.
(ETS is another company with great customer service, BTW.)

As far as I have ever heard, most of PTRs issues are with the 9KTs and new ones are probably fine.  The early ones had bolt carriers or bolt heads that were out of spec and couldn’t take a replacement locking piece.  I could probably send mine in and they’d take care of it but I’ll just do my steps to try to address it first.

The fitment of stocks on any of them has been fine.  I have German A3 stocks on the full sizes right now, I have used a Taiwanese A3 and the AC side folder on the full sizes as well.  The KT fits the Choate stock fine, but I think I have an issue with the bolt carrier and recoil rod that is causing my misfeeds.

I emailed Ptr before I bought the k and asked about shooting suppressed.  They recommended me getting a 80 deg locking piece.  So I assume they fixed the bolt spacing issue.
Mine was built last month and I ordered a rcm 80 degeee LP.  I'll check to see if the gap is still in spec once I install it.

Hadn’t thought of the customer service angle, I was thinking more about supporting a US company that supports our rights vs. a foreign one that doesn’t.  But my luck is terrible enough that I wind up utilizing customer service quite a bit

Including the 9mm versions, I have seven roller-lock guns that came from PTR.  I definitely am a bit of a fanboy!  They’ve stumbled a few times during the ownership transitions but they always bounce back.

The only negative I can really come up with is their prices have been creeping upward more than I’d like.  I really want to get a K3P (the G3K pistol) but it’s a wee more expensive that I’d like.  Oh, and I’m tired of the PTR-61 project taking so darn long to get to market.

Edit: oops, I meant the PTR-63 Numbers are hard!

I’ve been following their PTR-63, but don’t know of the 61; I’ve been out of the loop for a minute.  I just don’t understand why the 63 weighs so much, when the CETME-L weighs a pound less.  (But for that matter I don’t see why a 5.56 has to weigh so much when an M1 Carbine can be so much lighter weight, but I digress).

If there was a way to convert a 53 pattern to STANAG mags, I would quickly be in trouble.

In another life I used to sell PTR firearms, and folks never seemed to have issue with them.  A buddy has a couple of their 7.62x39 rifles and loves them.  So they make a logical place to start my 9mm roller lock ownership.

I bought my CT about 3-4 years ago I think.

-I love the top rail.
-Multiple stocks have fit fine.
I-Its SBR and I only shoot it suppressed, never swapped the locking piece, no roller dents.
-ETS mags work great, as do everything else, AC Unity tight but work.
-i had an issue when I first bought it, don’t remember what, and never could get ahold of anyone at PTR via email or phone multiple attempts, not even Rocky.  Probably just post covid.
-recently the hammer broke (last year) and I actually got a response and replacement hammer from first email, which I sold and replaced with a milsurp g3 hammer.
-I didnt like the aluminum MI MLok handguard and swapped it.
-i would buy another if I couldn’t find an MKE that had the same features for less

A poster above reminded me about the 80* locking piece.
I had forgotten about putting one in my PTR.

Even  before Super Safeties and other FRTs I wanted to add one to my 9KT since I used a suppressor sometimes.

It dropped right in and ran all ammo just fine.

Since the 9KT is gone now, I wanted to put a 80* lp in my AP5-P.
Nope.

After a few hundred rounds I was able to get a 100* to work in my gun.
(They supposedly ship with a 110, but I don’t know for sure.)
I’m hoping that I will be able to get a 80 or 90 in there at some point.

With your experience with the broken hammer, it reminds me of another question.

A LGS has the 9T pistol and a 9T factory SBR with all Magpul furniture and a Timney trigger, with the factory SBR being about $250 more than the pistol.

Worth going the factory SBR route for the furniture fitment and trigger, or worth saving some coin?

I got at least 4 PTRs.  Maybe more.  In the 7.62x39, it was stillborn and wouldn't cycle.  Had to send it in for warranty.  In one of my 9mms, it seems like they have some sort of billet FCG instead of the usual stamped steel housing.  That one is gritty and sometimes does not want to reset.  The PTR mags are bottom of the barrel.  Some rebranded korean steel ones that dont feed the last round and some ETS jam-o-matics.

TBH, I have a hard time recommending a PTR when the MKE ones are so dirt nasty cheap.  Better gun, better mags, better price.

How are they better?  Honest question and point of this thread, not trying to troll.

From what I see online, they’re maybe $200 cheaper than the PTR, but they’re imported by Century, the same Century that has managed to get various soup sandwiches imported through the years.  And many still don’t have a welded on top rail, and if they did I would be wary that it’s straight or to spec, because century.

The mags is worth knowing, but I imagine I would need to get more mags anyway.

MKE is a real war factory.  Their catalog includes more than just a few different types of guns.  They also do tanks, rockets, mines, anti aircraft, etc. Their pedigree is a couple stages better than PTR, who is working with reverse engineered data and equipment they scored at a going out of business sale, solely to make some roller guns for the US commercial market.  Given that all their mags kinda suck, I assume that PTR never invested in making mags.  They just order whatever they can get for cheap and in large numbers.

Century is really just the current importer for the MKE guns.  They have been brought in before by different people.  Century is responsible for distribution and maybe sticking some of the accessories in the box.  They have nothing to do with building the gun.  Downside is, if you do need warranty work, century isn't really equipped to fix anything.  You'll be looking at a replacement or being told to pound sand.  There have been reports of some guys getting a bunk MKE mp5.  I think its a numbers thing.  When they ramped up production, more lemons were able to slip through.

Got a chance to get to the LGS with one in stock.  Mag well was flawless, but I could tell that the stick mag it comes with is some cheap throwaway so I’ll need to get more mags.

And it definitely has the Timney trigger, so I went ahead with the buying process via the silencershop kiosk.

Of the clones I have handled the ptr seems the best as far as fit and finish.

My local shop ordered a MKE for a customer and saw the magwell was crushed. The box was pristine. The powder coat was also perfect.

Meaning this gun made it through the MKE factory smashed sometime after welding, was powder coated, and put in a box.

Sounds like QC is more like uh optional in turkey.

They don't test fire any of the guns over there? What.

They had a PTR and from my inspection it looked clean and very nice externally and magwell was tight.  Good welds. It looked externally as good as my HK.

I saw the price, and while “less than $1k” is certainly better than “more than $1k”, why that one vs. any others?

Or is there a good thread in this subforum to look through to answer these questions?

So my form 4 got approved while I was at work, and I drove to pick it up.

And man, I get it now:  better ergonomics, lighter, shorter, lower recoil, easier to suppress (soon)….

Compared to my folding Mini-14:

And because the wife and kids are out, I got a chance to do what every red blooded male does when their significant other isn’t around to stop them:  I LARPed with the new (unloaded!) toy to test how it would work out for home use.

Oh man I can’t wait to shoot it:

Also bought an actual HK mag (holy shit $$$), and have some 20 round Mora mags coming.  The thing also came with a Magpul drum that I don’t want, but I’ll keep it because anti-gunners don’t want me to have it.

Only issue I've had so far is the PTR 9KT does not work with MKE mags at all.  Bought 2 new ones with it and they don't lock up.  A friend brought me about 6 to try and none would lock.

I ordered KCI mags and they all work and lock up great.

Put the FRT in and shot about 300 rounds through it.  Not one issue.  Ran like a champ.

I spent YEARS trying to convince myself that other 9mm PCCs were “just as gud” and after getting my first MP5 clone I had to admit how wrong I was.  Horribly, horribly wrong.  Sure, it doesn’t have the gamer-gun ergos and speed features but it just feels so good to shoot and use.  It isn’t perfect but it’s pretty damn optimal!  And today’s aftermarket is so amazing that you can fill in a lot of gaps the original design had with a minimum of fuss.

Welcome to the family!

That said, your Mini is pretty damn cool too!  My dad left me his when passed and it looked like he dragged it through a 2003 Cheaper Than Dirt catalog, ha.  I cleaned it up and dumped the junk but boy would I love to give it an AC556 makeover!

I'm extremely happy with the OCL Milkman.  It rivals my SD.  Here is my PTR9 that I SBR'd, then got a used HK grip and added a RB FRT.

I had a chance this weekend to go look at 9mm cans, and holy smokes the new technology is crazy.  Dual-length, titanium, 3D print, flow through 9mm cans, etc.

I guess now I just need to figure out how much I want to spend, what materials, and if I want to try “one” 9mm can (pistol and rifle), or more than one 9mm option.  To say nothing of which mounting pattern I want (though I imagine tri-lug is good?)

For PCC I like tri-lug. It’s convenient but I admit it’s mostly for the cool factor.

However, keep in mind that PTRs can be a bit finicky in that respect and some tri-lug devices don’t play well with them, mostly flash suppressors, but there have been reports of a few suppressor mounts as well.  Resilient works for sure and the titanium shaves a few ounces too.

Tri-lug is the way to go on an HK for sure.  Just be aware that if you ever want to go old school cool and use a Surefire forend light, they won't fit with a suppressor on the tri-lug and they, SF, don't make the off set light adapters anymore. You can use the direct thread in front of the tri-lug, but it looks kind of goofy and dumb.

What is it that you don’t like about the Magpul furniture?  I may be leading up to something depending on your answer.

The Magpul furniture ruins the classic lines of the firearm.  But the more I play with it, the more I’m starting to take a “function over form” approach.  I put a VFG on it and am figuring out what optic I want, and Magpul furniture is starting to make a lot more sense.

I acquired a stripped metal lower that looks like it might fit, but I don’t want to change too much before I even fire the thing.

Dry firing the Timney trigger, it feels like the reset weight is a bit light, but I’m also very used to revolver triggers and things like a Tavor trigger reset.

I apparently just started the purchase process on one of these today.  Seems insanely lightweight and handy, and until I get the tri lug adapter I can try it on numerous pistols (Beretta 92s, 81s, and 80x).  Seems like a great way to dive headfirst into the suppressor game with a lot of built in flexibility.

Oh, and have a PA 9mm ACSS prismatic optic on the way.

An advantage that the Magpul stock has over the other telescoping stocks is that it’s almost a pound lighter in weight.   There used to be a company that made an ‘F’ style stock foot for the Magpul stock, but they went out of business years ago.

I added a Radiata Vitrix to mine.  Haven't tried it out yet but it function tests fine.  Got a good deal on it.

My Lithium got cleared today, hopefully I can pick it up sometime this week.  I’ll probably also do the Resilient tri lug mount, once I find one in stock.

Until then, the ACSS 9mm optic came in, so here’s a picture:

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to shoot it this week, too.

Shot it yesterday, and it was flawless the entire time, even running 115 blazer brass ammo and WWB.  Taiwanese mags, Korean mags, and of course HK mags, without a hiccup.

The Timney trigger was excellent the whole time, even though dry firing it made it seem like the return spring was a little weak.  In reality, it wasn’t.

It also ran well with the OCL Lithium, and the Primary Arms 9mm prismatic they make works very very well on an ADM mount:

It was a touch of gassy, which makes me wonder if I should get a flow through can like a Hux or OCL Milkman.

But now I want a wooden stock, and so many more accessories.

It’s fun getting back into guns again

Remember when JLD [now PTR] originally bought the equipment from the FMP factory, it was only for HK91/G3 guns. No MP5 equipment, so everything needed to make their MP5 is reverse engineered. I have an AP5, & AP5P that have been perfect, & about $400 cheaper each vs the PTR. I would buy the MKE guns over the PTR ones even if they were the same price. OTOH, I have an early JLD 308 gun built with mostly surplus parts that has been perfect. So my choice is to buy the MKE gun. GARY

So after shooting my PTR with my Lithium, I’m wondering how much of a difference a pass through can would make.  The Lithium was definitely not bad with any gas, but I noticed it was a bit smoky out the ejection port and through the trigger group (!?).

With the Lithium being giggle-levels of fun on various pistols, I am now toying with the idea of keeping the Lithium a direct thread for pistol use and trying something like the Milkman or another flow through 9mm can converted to tri-lug, but I’m also wondering if that’s worth it.  The Hux is cheaper than the milkman by several hundred bucks, but wondering about the weight/balance vs. sound, as I am hoping to turn this into the HD solution that my wife won’t be afraid to handle due to noise if she has to shoot.

Alternately wondering if it’s worthwhile to buy a dedicated 9mm rifle can, vs. putting tri lug adapters on my pistols and just going that route and accepting the smidgen of gas that results.  (It really wasn’t bad, and nothing like any suppressed AR).

The Milkman has so much internal volume because it's just so fat. With subs it is truly a dream to shoot. I used a Lithium for a while before I got the Milkman and there just isn't any comparison. Even with subs.

Currently my Lithium lives on a .357 lever rifle.
