Short 16" barrel, lightweight compact in 308 and/or 223? Too bad Remington went tits-up. I always liked the 7 for mountain hunting and hunting in general. |

| Look into Tikka. The compact models feature a shorter stock for kids or a woman in common short action calibers. If you want something short for yourself, they make "ranch" lineup that has a full-length stock with a short barrel. I've had nothing but good experiences with these rifles. |

If you want to do a build, Pacific Tool & Gauge sells Model 7 actions, in both standard and Remington custom shop (blueprinted) flavors. For a complete rifle, second the recommendations of Howa minis and/or Ruger American gen 2's (Ranch or standard). We have a bunch of American Gen 2's (predator, ranch, and regular) on the shelf at work and I've had plenty of hands-on time with them. They're not to T3X superlite action smoothness of course, but they're pretty close and for the price difference it's an easy pick, especially seeing the accuracy they'll put down. |

Not really a popular rifle but definitely small and light, Kimber has some really nice hardware out there. Buddy has one in .308, it is true to the reputation. Shoots really good with one, maybe two handloads. Otherwise it is an expensive light compact rifle with average accuracy/range. I too am a fan of the Mod 7, size is just right for good power/range and very compact. Just missed getting a deal on a 7 chambered in 260 Rem. ; that would be re-chambered to 6.5CM, but didn’t happen  . Had several, currently just one in 6mm Rem. That’s a hard chambering to find, so the 7 popped up at just the right time. Took down a Mt. Goat with it a couple years back. |
