Local funstore has two on the shelf. One with the open sights the other with no sights but Nikon 3x9 scope. Both have the stamped, skeletonized charging handle. Weren't these the later models that were very problematic? I think they are priced at $500 and $600, respectively. Cheap enough to pick up before the Kommierado licensing scheme goes into effect Aug 1st.  Of course, of they are the problem children of the Carbine world I'll pick up something else evil looking. Like a cheap Turkish bullpup 12 ga.  Gotta pump up the sales numbers to stick to Poleass and the dems just before the deadline. |

The "stamped and skeletonized" bolt carrier sounds more likely a Universal M1 Carbine. I have a 1964/65 Universal its essentially a GI parts kit gun and it is great. The later universals have some durability issues, and not GI parts compatible, but I've seen many of them work well. Many Carbine finickiness can be addressed by replacing bolt parts with good OEM spec parts and springs. I've found Korean KCI mags work great as do Keep Shooting mags. As Universal saw success in the market and sources for inexpensive surplus parts and OEM to run out of spec parts, they re-designed some parts to be cost effective to manufacture in house. Bolt carrier became stamped, Trigger housing made from aluminum, dual recoil springs, etc. Therefore Universal M1 carbines won't accept a USGI stock or replacement stock, nor many spare parts, and don't look quite "GI" But if you want an M1 Carbine look and the price is good and want to be able to shoot it occasionally - probably a fun shooter. |

Thanks! It's been so long since I've even considered the non-GI carbines as viable options l couldn't remember the specifics on why they should be avoided. I think I'll pass on them. |
