It is comfortable, while providing me with more mobility and free range of motion. I had an eagle plater carrier, and while it was pretty "cool", it was bulky and restrictive, not to mention very hot, even in the winter. My SHTF rig is the ALICE, which I admit may be a tad bit overloaded for a KISS setup. I feel naked with less than 6 rifle mags and 4 pistol mags. My main rig is a SKD Tactical Eagle Chest Rig in Multicam - with a Emdom 604 pouch and a TT Strobe Pouch on the right hand side. I can hold 8 but I run 4 rifle mags, and 4 pistol mags in it to keep things light. It stays in the truck with the 609 It is hard to say about a jungle war. We are in Iraq, in the desert and it gets pretty hot from what I hear, and look at those rigs. The military will probably stick to whatever they can pack full of ceramic armor, and load down with modular pouches, ie OTV's, LBV's, etc. I like the way the Rangers and Deltas did it in the early 90's with an ALICE rig over their body armor. Seems simple, yet effective sorry for the book[/quote Some of the rigs Marines were using in the 'ghan were considerably lighter. If we were to go back to the jungle, soft vests may be issued. |

Appears real to me. Do yourself a favor. Take a couple of bic lighters, and turn the pack inside-out. Carefully melt/sear the exposed edges of any exposed fabric that shows itself. Trim any loose threads to 1/4" or less length prior to searing. Swap out lighters when the one in use gats a bit too warm.
Doing this goes a long way towards preventing sewn-seam blowout, which happens on on gear with un-taped/un-finished edges on the fabric. Maybe practice on a couple of pouches first, till you get the hang of it. Not rocket science, but practice comes in handy. |

Much easier when doing it for an extended time. |

| Very nice. So the suspenders were custom-made? It'd be sweet to have some M1967 suspenders made in coyote brown. |

It might be worth your while to investigate the M-1956 "H"-style harness. Generally speaking, it carries the load better than the later "Y"-style harness that you have now. You might also consider obtaining short, plastic MALICE clips from Tactical Tailor, or short nylon fabric Tac-Ties from Maxpedition to replace the much heavier ALICE clips, which are also prone to mechanical difficulties. These minor points aside, you've made up an interesting rig. |

You can also use Zip Ties instead of the Alice Clips. You just have to cut em off if you take things off to need to rearrange things. |

I have a couple of 30rd AK mag pouches like these that I purchased from Brigade Quartermaster's years ago. I was wondering if anyone still made these. I have a Alice set up for the AK, Uses the Y harness, 2 AK mag pouches,2 canteens, butt pack, 2 first aid pouch's, one for the field dressing and the other has a compass in it. The pistol belt is an old Vietnam quick release buckle. |

The medium ALICE is a great size for general use, but sucks with no frame at all. THings in the pack tend to jab you in the back, and they just don't ride right. I've been wanting to try that mod myself - but with so many packs the ALICE is at the bottom of my preference list when I pick a pack for a day hike. |

It's always nice to have choices. Beides, some of the pouches they make are pretty much unavailable elsewhere, and can be had either in ALICE or MOLLE/PALS configuration. I mean, who else makes pouches for M-14, '03 Springfied and SKS stripper clips, for example? Not to mention Garand clip pouches. No, the stuff's not cheap, but it's quality stuff, and I can say that after buying some of it. |

No, the stuff's not cheap, but it's quality stuff, and I can say that after buying some of it. I don't use pouches anymore except for "secondary duty- stuff I would lend out or maybe for systems that are not "frontline"...and I'm not gonna spend much on those... I've pretty much standardized on HSGI Tacos for rifle mags. They are 100% modular- they'll work on a belt, on a vest, on a molle panel on the back of my trucks seats, even secured to a pack.....They work with EVERY rifle magazine I have tried them with- AR, AK, M1a, G3, Fal, Galil- same same......now I have ONE SET (actually, I have built several sets but they are identical) of webgear that is identical across any platform I want to run. It simplifies training etc.... As an aside, the best inexepensive Garand pouches I have found are the current issue Molle grenade pouches. They will very securely hold a pair of Garand clips. They are about $2 apiece on many Ebay sites or at least they were last year.....I have built a couple of FLC's using them. For less than $30 you can carry twice the number of Garand clips a GI would have in WWII and move them around wherever you want. |

As it is it's very comfy in a car - better clearance to steering wheel than a chest rig. I like the two fastex buckles - very quick to undo or to to get into. It's also pretty comfortable prone. ETA: FWIW I'm sure an LC-1 H-harness would work just as well, and be cheaper and easier to find. I just used what I had. Like the color a little better too. |

I have a Thermobak and on my current set-up I have the top d-rings clipped to the shoulders, the harness straps worked through the middle d-rings, and the bottom d-rings and the eyelets of the butt pack clipped to the clips at the end of the straps. |

Both ALICE and M1910 hangers will work, as well as MOLLE, but the spacing is slightly different than US stuff - doesn't bother me, but be aware. I haven't tried to mount a Camelbak yet - I should really look at that. I built it primarily for HD and with an eye to jumping in and out of my Tacoma with it on. You're right about the back panel not having any attachment points higher up, but as you said, you do have the snap clips that a D ring will clip into. As I said, I'm looking at removing the back panel entirely - my Camelbak is USMC coyote brown standalone, with strap, so if it mattered I guess you could pull it on over the rig. This would also enable you to remove the Camelbak for filling without removing the LBV - something the 'everything and a kitchen sink' guys don't think about too much.
If you're going into battle, there are definitely better rigs, such as plate carriers and armored rigs, but for civilian use, going ltwt, in and out of buildings and vehicles, I think ti works pretty well. An IFAK and Roly-poly are next. An empty canteen pouch on the left side is a simple thing but can be used as a dump for HD, collapses in the car, but allows a quick 1 Qt carry when dismounted. This is more of a get home rig than a never coming home rig, but I like it regardless. It's also fairly cool in the summer - not as much as mesh gear like an FLC (have some of them too) but definitely tougher. I've considered adding some webbing to the upper parts of the panels and think it would be a good mod to carry a radio, admin pouch or the aforementioned Camelbak as you wanted. ETA: Not sure it would work with the Y harness - I have the adjustment all the way up with the H harness - I think the Y would hang too low - at least on me. One nice thing about the mod is you can put it back the way it was if you don't like it. Not a permanent mod. |

Works well, and you have something to sit on if you need it. I have so many packs though, the ALICE is at the bottom of my picks now. Most of mine are older military packs BTW. I really like the FFL pack I have with the X-frame removed. A sternum strap would make it better though. |

Same as using your german folding pad. YMMV Regards Rod |

I got mine on eBay. I think I paid $25 for it. I have not had a chance to take it out yet. Looks neat, but that's about as much as I can say right now. Setting it up with the MSS bag was,for me, a little different than on the ALICE frame but not bad.
By the way, for those of you wanting Large ALICE packs in woodland, uscav.com will have them in stock on 3/11/13...but at a price...$79.95 for the pack with no frame. |

I keep hearing about genuine USGI large ALICE packs in woodland. I've never seen one, but I'd like to buy one if it is actually genuine USGI. OTOH, I've seen LOTS of copies, some better made than others, but even the best of these are suspect as to quality, IMHO. The hard thing to evaluate is the quality of the stitching, and even harder--going on impossible--is the quality of the thread used. No offense to above poster. |

Yes indeed I've looked forever for a large woodland issue pack. |

Us Cav does not specifically state that these are GI or surplus or anything like that, so I assume these are commercial. As to the quality, I cannot say; I'm just putting out there because I know there is interest. That is all. |

I searched these out many years ago and seem to recall they were Air Force issue. Thats not gospel, just what I seem to remember. Rod |
