TNVC Training executed a full Nightfighter 201 up in Great Falls Montana this past weekend (4-6 SEP 26). We’ve been coming to Great Falls for going on six years now, and our hosts (Great Falls PD/Cascade County Sheriff SWAT) make sure we have an excellent facility to train at. We also ran a full Nightfighter 101 this weekend as well. Weather was a mixed bag this weekend, from high clear skies to some scudding rain clouds…illumination was high while we executed flat range evolutions on day one of class (three-day package). Some rain blew in for the remainder of the weekend, but as NF201 is internal for days two and three, zero issues. Regardless, the old saying of “there is no bad weather, only poor clothing choices” continues to ring true, come to class prepared. The cooler temperatures were a huge break for those of us residing in the Southwest… Student population was a preponderance of LE as well as “average earth people” (#yespat) that were all switched on and ready to train hard, all but two of whom had attended Nightfighter 101. On that note, we ABSOLUTELY do not require our NF101 as a prerequisite, there are many great training teams and organizations out there that offer an equitable course…if you can’t make ours, make on of theirs (rising tides raise all boats…). A couple very small equipment issues on the flat range on day one, one goggle shut off completely (monocular), even after battery swap and tightening down the cap. That goggle functioned fine for days two and three. Possibly an issue in the power supply chain, we recommended reaching out to manufacturer and having it checked out. A couple big gun malfunctions occurred as well, we have to lube our rifles well so they will run well (as designed), remember to transition to our pistols (pull your reserve parachute) when the big gun fails inside of our zero distance, and if we’re going to reduce the malfunction…we have to trust the process (whatever your chosen malfunction reduction process is). We often see guys in the dark just start beating on the gun…stop, take a breath, remember the process, and execute it. If it works in the dark, it will definitely work in the daylight. NLTA favors a GI recoil assembly, aftermarket piston style will not allow the gun to run, ensure you’re set up accordingly (we discuss this explicitly in our welcome letter). Final note on NLTA…while we want our rifles well lubed for live fire, when running NLTA we want the opposite…very lightly lubed. We had a well lubed gun choke hard on a combination of NLTA projectiles and lube…teamwork solved that issue quickly though, well done fellas. NF201 is not necessarily about the application of a ballistic solution to a problem, but how we layer our technology to gain information to make a decision to solve a problem. We love to see the light come on (pun intended), when students get over the “it’s one or the other” and apply increasing levels of energy (goggles only, IR illuminator, white light) to solve a problem. This ties directly to Positive Identification (PID). We experienced several students engage no shoot targets, and when hot washed and asked why, some stated “I thought it was X or Y.” Did we THINK or did we KNOW? Were we positive? If I can see good in IR, but need more to see “gooder” (positively), why not apply white light to make sure you are sure? Our targetry is a simple system that forces students to execute the five steps of target discrimination and make a decision they would defend in court. We put students in challenging locations with interesting angles and real or photonic barriers to increase the stress levels to get them to apply the appropriate technology to solve a problem. Watching those tumblers fall into place by day two and three is awesome, and these guys got after it. Additionally, several companies stepped up to offer students swag and door prizes for their attendance. We are grateful their generosity and are proud to have them associated with our classes. Absolutely cannot say enough about Joe, Matt and TNVC training. NF201 was a fantastic course and I left feeling substantially more confident with my equipment and personal capabilies. If you're on the fence about this course - just take it. You'll learn a ton and walk away more capable and proficient. I experienced an intermittent failure of my PVS14 during some rapid fire/ live fire strings. Having a vis override laser solution allowed me to immediately transition to white light and keep making hits. For anyone considering new MFALs I would say vis override is an absolute requirement. Regarding the NVG failure, the company I purchased from (active vendor here) has already offered to take the unit back and look it over, though, I've not had a failure since after changing batteries. All the other students were fantastic and everyone was eager to help each other out and learn from one another's mistakes. I think over half this class were also students with me in NF101 last year so it was great to see some familiar faces! Great weekend training with everyone! |
