 TNVC Training kicked off the 2026 training season this past weekend (21-22 February) with Nightfighter 101 at The Ranch in Dilley Texas. We met Chad two years ago as he hosted Night Ops Summit and built a relationship to bring our training to what I like to call the “south of Dallas line” and bring TNVC to the great Republic of Texas. If you are looking for a world class location to train, for ANY training requirement, go to The Ranch…amazing location, incredible support to trainers and students, and Chad runs a tight ship. We’ll be running classes at The Ranch for a long time (as long as Chad will have us). Weather this weekend was superb and a perfect match for low and no light training with lows in the mid-40s, highs in the mid-70s and 10% or so illum…a great mix that made for a comfortable class, not having to fight nasty weather and do a ton of discovery learning. Students drive the OPTEMPO in any class, and this group of studs came to win…we got tons of reps in on every learning objective. Well done gents… This class ran like clockwork, see above for students driving OPTEMPO. Couple observations, while we focus on the application of technology and not necessarily shooting, several of these are gun centric: The AR was designed to run well lubed; we push it so hard that we give students SLIP 2000 in their pile o class swag. When we start hearing rifles sound like a pile of dead leaves, we can almost hear the malfunctions starting to happen…let us all make Eugene Stoner happy and luge our rifles as he designed them to be. Tied to a well lubed and proven gun, some ammo out there is notoriously powder puff or under powered and won’t drive a GI/to spec gun that well. When we start to tinker with our recoil assemblies and add low power ammo, that can lead to many malfunctions. We always recommend (and put in bold highlights in our welcome letter) to bring a proven gun with good ammo so we CAN focus on the application of technology and use our low and no light tools and not get sidetracked working malfunctions. Final thought here…when we have a malfunction in the dark, we have to trust proven TTPs to work them out as we can’t see the gun in a first focal plane environment. Switchology is a thing, and arguably the largest takeaway from NF101 after seeing and moving in the dark. Lights and lasers go on when we need them and stay on. Once we don’t need them anymore, we shut them off…we don’t want to either drag energy back to our feet or signal aliens on the flat range by leaving energy on during a reload. Constantly assess your ability to see what you need to see…learning occurred with a constant assessment of sight picture and goggle focus, as well as figuring out more laser and illuminator settings (see Switchology above) options in a changing illumination environment. We spend a lot of time talking about staying in a “conscious competence” level when we’re training on new skills in the dark with people we don’t know and guns and goggles and lasers (oh my). While the TTPs we’re working on aren’t necessarily complicated, once we start layering changing environments and lighting conditions, movement, switching, shooting, communicating to the mix it can get a little overwhelming. How do we solve this? Stay in the conscious competence level and take your time and walk through the process…until you execute a ton of reps and actions come naturally and run in the background. These are all things we can work on and build reps at either our home ranges or just in the backyard…do SOMETHING with your goggles, lasers, and weapons to build competency…sustain your training. Overall great class, this was a rock star group of students that we hope to see again at a world class training location, thanks to everyone that either came out or supported us. Additionally, several companies step up to offer students swag and door prizes for their attendance.
