I have ordered a new rifle in 6mm BR Norma. This will be a brand new cartridge for me, so thought I would see what experience the hive mind has. The barrel will be a 1:8. I currently have a stock pile of CCI-450s, I am hoping to use. When I am driving for work next week, I plan to pickup Redding dies and a bushing. Some reading makes me think a .266 might be a starting point. Will also grab brass while I am there. Lapua or Alpha. On to powder. I have 1lb of varget on the shelf, but would like to try some VV. I am guessing 140 might work? I know my buddy shooting 6Dasher likes the Berger 105 hybrid, so i might try that bullet first. Any tips, tricks, known good starting points I should know? |

I had a great discussion with Greg at southern precision rifles about 6br when i was buying my 223 barrel and did a lot of reading on this before finally deciding to go 6 arc instead. The truth is 6br is just stupid accurate and a large amount of powders work greg told me even ball powders are amazing in it just not temp stable. N140 is a yes too... You basically have to try to load bad ammo from everything i learned. You won't be disappointed in accuracy and it won't be difficult to load for. |

Unless you know the neck wall thickness of the brass you are a head of time, guessing on a bushing size not the best idea. If neck wall thickness is 0.013X2 + 0.243 = 0.269 Remember Single shot use. You want 0.001 spring back (0.268) Magazine fed in bolt gun. You want 0.002 spring back (0.267) Magazone fed gas gun. You want 0.003 spring back. (0.266) CCI 450 Varget Berger 105 Hybrid GOLDEN |

So i just need one bushing to get started. I will change my shopping list from .266 to .268 if that would be a better starting point, |

A long term goal of mine will be to start switching some reloading equipment, so that some loading can be done at the range. My plan is to shoot 10 rounds in the process of zeroing and how I like to season a new barrel. I then have three powder charges of varget, and each of those have three seating depths. Hopefully that gives me an idea how close I am, to know if I can get the rifle ready in two weeks for a match, |

Good day of testing at 100, 600 and 1,000 yards. Nothing I tested shot over 3/4 MOA. Multiple one hole groups at 100, with one shot squeezing out of the group opening up to .4". Rifle seems happy around 2830fps. I think I have some more to squeeze out in seating depth. Best tested was .010 off the lands. I will probably test +/- .003 of that. See if things tighten up a touch. Time to run the credit card for 8lb of varget and another 500 projectiles. |

The problem, as if it's a "problem" is that with the 6mmBR everything looks great at 100-how do you decide? I switched to 300yds and look for minimum vertical dispersion to make any decision.

I have been reloading and hammering steel for about 10 years. This long range benchrest deal is a whole other situation. Until I actually figure out wtf im doing my goals remain the same. Goal 1: only shoot your target. Goal 2: get all 5 shots on your target. Beyond that, I am just spending money on better gear and trying to refine my reloading processes. I have only shot one long range benchrest match (with a different rifle, that is basically a PRS rifle i bolted a front bag rider to) and I shot a few 4" groups at 600 yards. I was fairly ok with that. I also didnt shoot anyone elses target and landed all 80 score rounds on my targets. Lol |

Thought I would share the results of my first 1,000y benchrest match. As mentioned, rifle is a factory Savage Model 12 dual port. Shooting lapua brass, cci450, varget and Berger 105 hybrids. 2850fps. Day 1: 4 - 5 shot targets. Score average 44.25/50. Group average 7.715" Day 2: 4 - 5 shot targets. Score average 37.25 /50. Group average 8.476" Day 3: 2 - 5 shot targets. Score average 47.5/50. Group average 8.641" Total score average over 10 targets: 43/50. Average group size over 50 shots: 8.277" Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Those are ridiculously good groups for a first outing. Congratulations! Except for the good shooting, results from 1,000 yards mean little unless you tell me about the wind conditions. I'm just not experienced enough at that distance to discern what the photos mean. Is the lateral dispersion all due to wind or did you call some as wide or... and ditto for the vertical dispersion? Also, was there a significant head/tail wind component to the wind contributing to vertical dispersion? I ask because +/-10 mph is equivalent to +/-15 fps velocity dispersion. |

I would say that 75% of the time there was a 7 -10 mph full to half value cross wind. 25% of the time there was a 10-13 mph full to half value tail wind. Most of the vertical was wind and my ability to shoot. Sighters were really hard to see due to mirage maybe 2 of the targets. Really nice conditions overall. One target I am 90% sure the one I dropped low was because the shot read 40fps slower. Knew right off there would be a problem. Lol |
