So I'm turning 50 in March and decided its time for the big 50 at 50. I was thinking of the Armalite AR-50 and wondered if I need to wait on something else or just get it. I have no real use for one besides just having it, any input is apricated. |

You will shoot a 50 cal musket a lot more than a 50 BMG CVA 50 cal Bergara barrel And in 4 yrs you can get a 54. Did you get your 35 Whelen a few years ago ? If not pick that up also. |

Black powder solvent doesn’t have the nasty odor of most solvents and if you run a wet patch after each shot it’s not that bad but it does take cleaning and grease on the breach plug. I guess you could get a couple of 45-70s since they cover the next twenty years . But trust me on the 35 Whelen it’ a thumper with just a tad more recoil than 30-06 . Most of the 50 bmg guns are not precision rifle accurate which is rather disappointing considering ammo cost. For the same money you could have a very nice GA Precision rifle or a CVA scout in every caliber. |

Armalite is a good gun so if you want it get it. It's set up like a normal bolt action so it's familiar. Has one of if not the best brake in the business so everyone says the recoil is very low. Trigger is also known to be one of the better 50 triggers. In general they are known to be pretty accurate if you are in to that sort of thing. Con I can think of is it's length. Length isn't the end of the world but not only does it not come with a hard case(or soft that I know of) it wont even fit in most rifle cases. If you are shooting at ranges or other similar fixed setups the weight and size is a non issue or even an advantage. One of the things I really like about my Barrett 99 is that it's a nice compact(for a 50) package that comes in a pelican case. I've always thought the 99's are one of the best do it all guns out there. I actually bought an Armalite years ago but sold it to fund an 82 before I shot it. I'd buy an Armalite without hesitation. We have a few people on here with them. Looks like PSA has it at 3200 and Armalite has it 3100. I don't know what a good price is now. A while back I saw some cheaper but I don't follow them closely. |

The guy at the gun show had a Vulcan for $6000....all I could think about was the Vulcan ar15s.....LoL There was another 50 that took an AR lower receiver. The mags feed from the side. I think he wanted $2300 I passed on both. |

It's hard to consider weird/discontinued/niche stuff when you can get the Armalite you asked about for $3K. |

| There's a guy local here who builds precision 50 bmg mag fed bolt actions with optional supressors. I just can't remember his name but could get it if you want. Buddy of mine has one and it's pretty sweet. I have an AR50 and have nothing bad to say about it. For an accurate economical option it's probably top of the list. |

Around 10 years ago I bought a 50 "just because" I wanted to have one, and had bought ammo for it years in advance. The lovely legislators in CT had rammed through a semi-auto ban in 2013 so I bought a bolt action 22" Serbu BFG-50 from my cousin. I outfitted it with a SS 16x42 scope, and LT107 mount. My range doesn't allow 50bmg, but a friend was gracious enough to take me to his range twice so I could put a few dozen rounds through it. Those are the only two times I have shot it, and now a decade down the road I'm toying with the idea of turning it into something else that I'll use  They are nice to have (or say you have), but I'm going to caution that you'll need to make an effort to shoot it if you don't really have a use for it... That's my input! Edit- PS, happy 50th! |

I have owned about 12 .50s. The Armalite AR50 is the easiest to shoot and will hold 1-1.5 MOA at 1000 with match ammo. |
