| Has anyone chopped the barrel and handguard to SBR their LC Carbine? I bought one in 45 ACP a couple of months ago and love shooting it suppressed.. It's just SO DANG LONG with the 16" barrel and suppressor hanging off the end of it. I'd like to see what length people have shortened them to and what they did with the handguard on them. Also, where did you send it to have the work done? |

First of all, the ruling is applicable to GOA members only. If you are not one, you cannot do it. It's not universally applied to every gun owner. Secondly, don't do it by just browsing through the headline, the devil is in the detail. Also even PSA, one of the plaintiff, is reluctant to provide their opinion on converting already purchased rifle/carbine to SBR, as the ruling don't cover the requirement for SBR engraving which is a different law. If PSA said they don't know and they have their own legal team, you better stop what you think you are going to SBR guns you have right now. PSA recommend you speak to your own lawyer! Serial number and marking requirements were not enjoined for anyone. The rule requiring a maker to add their own markings to a firearm, even one that already has a manufacturer's serial number, still applies to everyone (26 U.S.C. 5842(a); 27 C.F.R. 479.102). Whether and how that rule applies when a covered individual reconfigures an already-serialized firearm hasn't been addressed by the Court or ATF. We cannot tell you the answer, and we are not going to guess. Ask an attorney about this specific point before you reconfigure. State and local law still applies. This ruling changes the federal landscape for covered transactions. It does not erase state registration requirements, permits, restrictions, or prohibitions. Some states outright ban SBRs. Other state laws tie legal ownership to registration under, authorization from, or compliance with the NFA which, until those laws are changed, may prevent you from owning an unregistered SBR in that state. Those restrictions apply even if you are a covered individual. Know and understand your state and local laws BEFORE reconfiguring your firearm. Again, we highly recommend that you consult with a qualified attorney before reconfiguring a firearm into an SBR. |
