This one is kind of odd... Ages ago, I had a 45/70 lever gun threaded by eastTXhunter (RIP Morgan), in 5/8x24. I've got a big Bowers VERS50 to put on it, with the correct thread insert, works great...but - I'm kind of wondering now if I should have gone with .578x28 threading for it. Thoughts? Should I see if it can be re-threaded for .578x28, or is keeping it at 5/8x24 the play? I don't know enough about barrel threading to really know if one is better than the other in this application. The VERS50 is a big bitch but it works  I'm side-eyeing some of the other more current cans out there (Primal, Bushwacker, others) and maybe saving some weight...

| Got me on that one, bud... My Marlin Trapper came threaded, and I just found the correct brake that went on it. Got my Hybrid with ASR mount living on it. I cannot remember the exact thread pitch, but it was something weird... I want to say it was same as what 450 BM is threaded... I may be wrong there... but it was def a weird one.... |

.578-28 (37/64-28) became a US standard for .45 cal pistols because that is the diameter of a 1911 barrel. It has become more common on .40 & 10mm hosts than the original 9/16-24 because it's really just stupid to have yet another pattern when .45 cal cans are used on them almost always anyway. There is zero reason to thread a .458 cal rifle with a much more husky barrel in .578-28, though, and I would recommend against it. 5/8-24 generally makes the most sense, 5/8-32 and 11/16-24 are also somewhat common. |

Yeah, doing some light googling, looks like S&W/Marlin/whomever now defaults to 11/16x24 - meaning the threaded part of the barrel is a little thicker than my 5/8x24 - which is probably a safer bet for higher pressure things, and the standard 45acp thread pitch isn’t probably the best idea on a 45/70 in the first place, so that’s good at least So I don’t feel too bad about it now. Honestly I haven’t looked too deeply at other large-bore cans…but looking there, it looks like most if not all have 5/8x24 as an available mounting pattern, so maybe I’m not as bad off as I thought I was

| I have a .578x28 threaded .45 PCC, and it took some compromises to get a muzzle device that I wanted on it, not all that many good options for rifle use. Way back in the day, I had Morgan make me an adapter to use that barrel, ultimately I had it re-threaded to 5/8-24. 5/8-24 is almost universal, I'd purposely seek out that threading on a rifle. I had my old 45/70 threaded 5/8-24, and it worked out great. |

Ok, that all makes me feel much better honestly - this was I think the first thing I sent out to be threaded and I just kind of randomly picked a threading…Morgan didn’t throw a flag on the play so I let it ride but it was always gnawing at the back of my head I didn’t think he’d steer me wrong, but I just don’t know enough to have an opinion…well, now I do, I guess Thanks everyone! |
