Please note this is “experimental” reloading, with terribly little relevant book data. Here be dragons, enter at your own risk. Most of this thread brought to you by the generosity of @bigtex84 Due to archiving, had to make a new thread. Archive link: HERECopied last post as follows; Control group of the factory Win 255gr gave me 957fps AVG, 47 ES, and 16.2SD. Five shots fell into a “thumb nail” size group at 42yds. Plenty good. I’ve shot them into water jugs before and got mediocre, but consistent expansion. The 250gr FP spitzer slugs did the following (one shot each to save material); 12.5gr LIL’GUN - 1254fps 12gr - 1277 11.5gr - 1211 11gr - 1153 10.5gr - 1109 The 186gr RNHP, also loaded over lil gun, gave me; 11.5gr - 1317fps 11gr - 1225 10.5gr - 1163 10gr - 1157 9.5gr - 1094 All the primers are fairly rounded yet, seeming to be more rounded each time. The 250gr loads ejected, but locked open on the carrier (short stroke). The 186gr tried at the highest, but completely failed to cycle. Of course I would be using these with a silencer and at this time assume they can all be made to cycle. For today’s test using a Labradar, I was using a bare muzzle. I was very concerned about wasting resources on no-reads. For all handloaded shots, considering the poor case fill, I placed the cartridge in the chamber and pointed the muzzle down 30-45*, and sent the bolt home with the release. I wanted maximum chance for a pressure spike from the powder flashing over (which I don’t particularly believe is a reality, but nonetheless, there’s little room for error with 55kpsi next to my face). ETA: the hand loads all made round holes, and tried to make a group. Vertical stringing occurred. They “shot straight” as far as I can tell. Nothing crazy. Today I got some more shot. Same firing method, all made a usable “group” with round holes. All loaded with Lil’Gun. COAL varies, can post those details later if anyone wants. I continued the 186gr testing with a repeat of 9.5gr, only 15fps off last test with a velocity of 1109. 9.3gr 1080fps 9gr 1081fps 235gr Wadcutter 10.5gr 987fps 10gr 1162fps 9.5gr DNR The 250gr Spitzer Flat Point was also a bit faster this time (and 30* warmer). Doing 1134fps from 10.5gr. 10gr 1087fps 9.5gr 1016fps Some 250gr SUB-X from Hornady that I recently picked up, as follows; 11gr 1143fps 10.5gr 1061fps 10gr 987fps 275gr lead HP 11gr 1230fps 10.5gr DNR 10gr 1130fps And finally, the Big Daddy, the 294-slobberin grain behemoth of a Hollow Point slug, which I had zero expectations of stability… made approximately a 1” group at 42yds. 10gr - DNR (I was not happy) 9.5gr 1085 9gr 1021 None of these loads cycled the gun as fired (bare muzzle, gas wide open). I forget the buffer, carbine spring. I believe the heavier choices will work with a silencer.Attached File Attached File Below is the lubed 294gr, 250gr SubX, and a 180gr Power Point. Attached File Attached File Random projectiles from my bullet trap. They also went through about 1/4” of cheap plywood. I notice some lost their gas-check. Interesting how the one SubX had the jacket crack at the cannelure. I believe my next post will get me to shoot some water jugs, now that I have a pretty good idea where I need to go with these. | Find some 1680 powder. find what the amount of space you have in the cartridge with a seated bullet. Then find out how much powder will fill that empty space. I think 1680 might work. It has a tremendous amount of gas for the amount of powder burned. You are also going to need to have your gas system at a pistol length. Or you will not be able to get it to cycle at a subsonic speed. |

The bullets were shot at the crotch between two faces, with a third backing it up (berm is bigger, but they stop there). Pretty much skid off and into the back. Surprised the HPs didn’t collapse. Raked out the pile with a stick. Eventually I’ll get around to shooting some into water. I’m thinking they will expand. |
