You're getting there. But, with regard to 9mm, 40 S&W and .357 Sig your thinking/reloading is inside the box.
I can load all three calibers under 600 fps. Not that you would have a need. The hard cast " moly coat " bullets according to what I read won't lead or lead significantly when loaded under 1100 fps. There's two more issues we've not discussed yet. The second G21 failure mentioned in my post was a product of old school theory run amuck. Not enough neck tension and oal set just short of transition area. Resulting consequences were " tug of war in reverse." Pressure escapes both ahead of and behind bullet. By blocking forward escape pressure begins to push both forward and backwards. Against bullet and breech. Holding breech is resistance in recoil spring. If bullet is lodged from inertial sling as was the G21 pressure moves case head backwards until finding an area within case to rupture, ruptures happen in the unsupported area of chamber and give the look of having been fired out of battery. So, if I understand this correctly, the Dillon link states the issue is with leading and lead buildup that constricts the barrel and causes excessive pressure that results in a kaboom. So, soft cast or swaged lead bullets with full power loads could be dangerous, but hard lead and lower power target loads along with a good, regular, cleaning regime SHOULD keep you out of trouble. The problem I see is that the 9mm, 40 S&W, .357 Sig and other high pressure loads could cause leading in certain barrels even with the above qualifiers. |

Bringing thread back full circle, Glocks and lead bullets.
Exception * lead bullets are safe to shoot in Glocks * WRONG. Above is a statement in the general sense leaving us to assume all lead bullets are safe to shoot in Glock Polygonal bores. I made a phone call to Glock a year or so ago, identifying myself as Glock owner, serial number PYE XXX and I want to know. Can I shoot lead through my Glock barrel ? After the laughter stopped on the other end, answer was NO. Don't take my word for it, call Glock for yourselves. Post Glocks response here. Keep your bhn above bhn 18, velocities below 1100 fps, shy from powders like Titegroup, scrub bores religiously and according to everyone I've visited with over time the practice of shooting lead is safe. Swaged lead bullets have bhn less than bhn12, generally swaged lead is 8-10bhn. Dillon pdf says everything that needs to be said applying to soft lead. I've read of guys casting at 20-22bhn, that's hard, but brittle. OAL, inertial sling and short, sharp transition areas are my main concern when loading pistol. Ogive positioning isn't forgiving in pistol chambers, like rifle chambers. Chambers run smaller than rifle, powders burn faster than rifle, catastrophic case and chamber failures are more common to handgun than rifle. Keep bullet ogives clear of rifling, Ogive nosed into rifling with lead fouling wedged between is a clogged bore. Neck tension holds bullets in place. That line we say and hear so often, don't worry with a crimp, straight walled pistol head spaces on case mouth. Ask an old time revolver handloader about bullet walk. Garbage in, garbage out. Watch the context of talking points, they can get a guy in trouble. Pistol does headspace on the case mouth, but pistol needs protection from both setback and inertial sling. All summed. Clean barrels, watch for fouling, keep velocity in check, don't push oal, insure bullet doesn't loose position on case mouth and use hard lead AND YOU SHOULD BE SAFE TO SHOOT LEAD THROUGH GLOCKS POLYGONAL BORE. | Shot thousands of lead bullets through my G21 when I was a college student. Mid power reloads and I kept an eye on the barrel leading. Switched to plated and jacketed when I could because wax lubed lead bullets are just messy. Leaves a mess in your bullet seating die and in your pistol. And there is the lead exposure issue which is another topic... |
