I had to chance to sight in and use 2 different IR Hunter (not MKII) 320 35mm units this past weeknd.  As an owner of several FLIR units, in comparison the display between the IRH 320 35mm and the FLIR 640 35mm is the same to my eye.  I assume the 640 35mm IRH would be superior to the FLIR 640  35mm LED.

I really like the menu and operation dials on the IRH.  They are easier to use and far superior to the FLIR buttons.

As I said above I had two identical New units to play with.  Both units had issues with the performance of the functions.  Both units during the sight in process had the sight in adjustment screen freeze up.  Menu item 3 was the sight in menu.  The rulers are present on the upper center and right center of the screen.  As you make and adjustment there is a red bar that moves according to your clicks, these bars move the opposite direction you naturally assume them to move compared to bullet impact, which is no big deal after you get your mind around how it works.  It is not as expected and the manual gives no indication as to which direction impact is moved when adjusting the unit.  Or at least I did not see this information, we ended up using the trial and error method. Both units froze up during sight in.  We would go to make and adjustment and the red bars had disappeared and clicking the knobs gave a jerking image at the centerline of the rulers.  Scrolling the menus and back to #3 or the sight in screen would not solve the problem.  The only way to fix it was to switch the unit off and back on and the unit would return to the last adj made.   Not that big of an inconvenience but obviously and indicator there is an issue with the programming.

On one unit when changing the reticle the default reticle would not appear of you switched to the mil dot or BDC reticle and back.  The only way to get the default reticle to appear was to switch the unit off and back on again.

Both units were new and came with completely dead and 3/4 dead 123 batteries straight out of the bag.

The height of the units ocular lens seemed uncomfortably low on the rail compared to my FLIR unit, and the FLIR is too low already IMO. The mount is a fantastic, rock solid Larue ACOG mount but it needs to be 1/4" higher minimum.  You cannot look straight through the optic with a standard cheek weld.  You end up looking through it slightly sideways as you push your face into the rubber pressure opening eyecup on the IRH.

Side by side I would say the IRH has superior menu and adjustment features compared to the FLIR.

The OLED OF THE 320 IRH is equal to the LED 640 FLIR.

IRH has programming issues, or at least the units I ued did.

The FLIR is more comfortable and natural to look through.

If the IRH has the warranty service that FLIR does I would be interested even with the programming issue due to the Farrrrrr superior menu and adjustment features.

As far as warranty goes  sent my FLIR RS-64 35mm overnight to FLIR yesterday because the USB charging/recording port was stretched out to the point I had to tape the cable in and there was a dead spot on the LCD screen at 9:00.  FLIR received it today and I recieved a tracking number today for a BRAND NEW IN BOX UNIT on is way back to me, that will arrive by Friday.  That is superior customer/warranty service.

The IRH looks promising but until there are some warranty replacements or repairs that are reported on here i am holding onto see what FLIR reveals at SHOT.

Since the standard hunter has been out a while, it is not good to hear there are still software bugs.  That does not bode well for the Mark II.

Software is a black hole of death for small companies.  By the nature of what these scopes are, they are software intensive.  As and engineer working with high tech companies for 30 years, my experience is that small companies should not make software intensive products.  The pressure to get a product to market before it is adequately beta tested is too great.  This is a problem for big companies too.  However, big companies usually get closer on the first try and they usually have more resources for fixing the problems that slip through the cracks.

Not good.  I have been on the fence regarding purchasing a Mark II.  For $6500, I want perfection.  $6500 is a ton of money for me.   I think I will wait to see what FLIR does at Shot Show.

I understand and nobody wants a scope with issues they didn't know about before the purchase. The MK II is not your unit if you want software perfection. This unit is about performance, and not about perfect menu operation. The unit will lock up if you do things like run through all the menus as fast as you can, or jump from clip-on mode to reticle 2, or other things that would never happen during real use of the device. If you are looking for image quality, ruggedness, and overall range performance the MK II is an awesome unit. If little things like a menu icon disappearing when you go from clip-on mode back to standard bug you, go with another unit.

That just sounds like excuses.  An element of performance is not having to reboot the unit to get it to work.

Don't they all do that? All of my .MIL units seem to do that. The UTM will actually change only the *portion* of the reticle that is over a reverse color.

THAT is cool, and blows your mind when you first see it.

They are all coming out buggy.  Unfortunately you are paying the for the thermal tech, not the perfect software.

Recall that a top grade thermal scope just a few years ago was in the $20k range.  Everyone is trying to get the price down and bugs are one of the results.

Thanks for adding your experience. I think it helps all prospective IR Hunter buyers understand more about what to expect from the units.
Yes, the MK II is a huge improvement and I have not seen a fixed focus thermal system that comes close to the image quality or features of the MK II.
Every current thermal weapon sight that we rent and sell uses the same method of adjusting the reticle position. I understand what you are saying about how the top turret adjusts windage on the IR Hunter and on a day scope the top turret adjusts elevation, but moving the reticle to the point of impact is how you adjust any thermal or digital scope. It's opposite of a day optic and more like sighting in a bow.
Some of the units will move the scene first for a few clicks, then move the reticle if you get too far from the center of x/y. The only digital weapon sight unit I know of that moved the display/scene only to the correct position instead of the reticle was the original Sightmark Photon 3.5X and 5X, and those units had turrets like a day scope. What ends up happening is you can't see part of your display. It didn't work out very well. It's not the perfect solution but it just works better to move the reticle on the display even though it may look off center.
The way that thermals are set up on 1X digital zoom it is not uncommon for your reticle to be off center, then when you use the digital zoom the image is adjusted to zoom on the center of the reticle and not the center of the display.

You can see that happening at :59 in this MK II video:

The only easy way around this whole scenario is if your rifle happens to shoot dead center of your display when you mount it. You can shim you mount(not a great solution), modify your mount(if you screw it up you have to buy another),  or buy some sort of a vertically adjustable mount. I don't know of anything specific on the adjustable mounts. Hope that helps.

Does anyone make a MOUNT that can handle adjustments?

Seems to me like some of the adjustments could be handled better by adjusting the entire device towards the target

Not sure I see the point of that. Why would you want to move your optic ever? Internal adjustments are all I would ever want.

OK, have had mine over a week now so I am an expert. Putting review from other thread here for simplicity.

First impressions

1) Light
2) Compact
3) Intuitive
4) Awesome

Fired it up and and within 10 seconds saw Dillo hiding in thick grass I could not see with naked eye. Today I will get it zero'd and shoot something.

Gun is AAC 9" MPW in 300 BLK, with KAC URX Rail, 762-SDN6 silencer, Atlas Bipod. No love for collapsible stocks, so I swapped on an MagPul MOE. Also swapped in an ambi-selector as I am left handed.

Added #45 Butler Creek Flip-Up lens cap to protect the front and help with calibration during turn-on, as it wants 5-10 seconds of a blank field at start-up. No more covering it with my hand.

Well i whacked the Dillo a little while ago. Sorry no video, I do not have that setup. Zero'ing took only a few minutes. Elevation needed no adjustment, Windage just needed 4 MOA left. I am using Barnes 110 TAC-TX zero'd at 50 yards. HOB is 2.75". Muzzle velocity with silencer is 2100fps.

What I really like about this unit is the ability to ID targets. Could clearly see the Dillo armor and tail. I also have no problem ID'ing birds, rabbits and squirrels. Ranges so far out to 100 yards. Can easily count engines on planes 12K feet up over my head. Clarity of Resolution of this unit runs circles around my PathFindIR, LS-64, etc. I also like that it is a perfectly good day scope. I zero'd it in daylight using a NRA-D1 target. I could clearly see the perforated rings!

Another pic:

Got the UNV-MDVR. Nice compact unit, great quality, nice cables nothing to dislike. Nice simple easy to menus. Took a few tries to find optimum settings. I am using 720x576, Video Quality High, 30fps.

Settings on IRHunterMkII are 60Hz, and Video Out turned on. Only thing I dislike is you have to set video out to ON each time you fire it up. It is not a retained setting. Fortunately UNV-MDVR beeps if no signal present to remind you. If anyone knows of a way to retain setting, please let me know.

http://youtu.be/kB4cc6HP1ss

Finally spied a coyote:

http://youtu.be/kDZYZs4fEZQ

Show below is how I mounted the UNV-MDVR camera. Note I cut a slot so I could remove the SDcard without taking recorder off stock. I am left-handed so this mount position does not interfere. Electrical tape is very thin so no interference with charging handle.

I like long eye relief so I invert the shutter. I know some folks cut petals off but that is not needed:

Wish List:

1) Video Out is a retained setting.
2) On-Board SD recording.
3) Auto shutoff after X minutes.

I've been following this thread as I have been considering buying a new MK II myself. I have been using a MK I 320 2X model since their release this summer and a THOR 320 also. First, a lot of folks act like the MK I was a horrible scope which it isn't. My MK1 was bought right after IR defense addressed  the first software issues and has been flawless in operation with lots of hours behind the scope in conditions from summer heat, fog ,rain and snow/ice. I've not experienced any crazy software problems myself.

The MK -I 320 19mm is very compact, lite weight and mounts well on my rifles. The controls are simple to use and it's very fast to power up and shoot with one flip of the on/off switch. Twice as fast as the THOR to power and get shot off. The scope is super rugged and holds up to real world use in field conditions. My MK-1 has held perfect POI after hundreds of shots fired also.

The weak points for the MK-I are the big LCD screen while nice and huge it stretches out the 320 image to much which hurts your image resolution/sharpness overall. I think the lack of focusing lens makes it worse. I think this is why IR defence upgraded to the smaller 640x480 OLED screen to improve image quality.

There are a few things I would like to see changed in the software for ease of use and bonus features like return to previous settings on power up and ability to save two or more POI for different rifles ( real handy on the Thor) just to name a couple.

I've used over a half dozen different thermal scopes in the field and haven't seen a "perfect" one yet  in my eyes as far as features, software, design and
performance. Each design/model has had strong and weak points to them. That said the MK-1 is a very capable hunting scope and I can flip the switch and shoot a coke can at 75 yards right now with ease.

I hope the MK II  design proves to provide better image quality/sharpness and upgraded software/ features. The MK scopes have a great housing design and controls overall.

The only reason I haven't upgraded yet is my MK-I has been doing a great job and it's paid for already. That makes it hard to spend another 5000-6000K for alittle more performance.

I have never used an ATN Thor, but I am sure the ability to save POI for different rifles would be very handy. I wish my Mark 2 had that feature or a numerical zero then I could simply record that number on paper myself. I made a sketch of the bar and line windage and elevation, then counted the number of clicks back to the scopes center. I have been able to move the scope between two rifles, and go back to that rifles zero. I have never trusted quick detatch mounts. I guess Larue has it figured out, because thiers has returned perfectly back to zero for me so far. I am debating on buying the smaller Mark 2 to avoid the hassle of changing zero. I am just not sure if that hassle is worth $5500. It took me about six months of saving man toy money to buy the Mark 2 , and it has been worth every penny to me. Night hunting is not just a hobby for me though. Its my passion !

RenegadeX, I also have an MPW9 and 762-SDN-6, and have a IR Hunter Mk II 35mm on the way (supposedly arriving mid-January, hopefully sooner).

Two quick questions for you:

1. What did you add to your 6 o'clock rail position in order to mount your vertical fore grip that far back? If you have part #s or anything like that, it would be much appreciated, as I want to move my vertical foregrip back from where the existing (tiny) rail section is.

2. What rail cover did you add to the 9 o'clock position to get the grippy texture? Would like to do that to mine as well.

Can't wait for my thermal to arrive!

I think I have found my thermal scope! It sure is difficult buying thermal scopes right now.  The technology is rapidly evolving right now, I'm afraid if I buy something now that it will be eclipsed by a large margin in the next year or two.  This time last year everyone was so excited for the Flir RS scopes and within a few months they became dated by several new products.  I hate to buy something and a year later be able to buy something better for less money.

And the clip-on aspect? Awesome. Never thought I'd be able to clip on a stand alone thermal.

Any chance for pictures of a thermal screen through a 1-4 or 1-6 optic?

Thanks!

Don't know about the MK or MKII (hope to in the near future), but the multiple reticle savings on the Thor and Armasight units work great.  I've got a Thor zeroed for supers and subs out of the same AR, a suppressed 77/44 and a suppressed 10/22.  The Thor saves up to 4 POIs and works great once you get the hang of it.  On the QD mounts, I haven't spring for the Larue mount and am still using the supplied ARMS17 and it has worked just fine for me on the AR, it takes a bit of adjustment for the non-spec rails on the 77/44 and the 10/22 and swapping back to the in-spec AR rails.  Don't know if the Larue would be any different though.  Completely off topic, but I recently got a riser block made specifically for the Thor that installs between the Thor and the ARMS17 that raises it by about 7/8" and it works GREAT.

Finally spied a coyote:

http://youtu.be/kDZYZs4fEZQ

Show below is how I mounted the UNV-MDVR camera. Note I cut a slot so I could remove the SDcard without taking recorder off stock. I am left-handed so this mount position does not interfere. Electrical tape is very thin so no interference with charging handle.

http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz314/Umbrarian/Guns/DSC00654_zpscd385a1a.jpg

I like long eye relief so I invert the shutter. I know some folks cut petals off but that is not needed:

http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz314/Umbrarian/Guns/DSC00648_zps85ac36d2.jpg

Wish List:

1) Video Out is a retained setting.

2) On-Board SD recording.

3) Auto shutoff after X minutes.

Nice setup. I agree on the auto shut down and video out being a retained setting.

Also, just FYI we have a new rifle stock pouch for the MDVR that is more rugged and attaches to any AR15/AR10 style stock.

And the clip-on aspect? Awesome. Never thought I'd be able to clip on a stand alone thermal.

Any chance for pictures of a thermal screen through a 1-4 or 1-6 optic?

Thanks!
I will put this on the MK II to-do list.

You and me both!

For years I have said I'm going to buy a PVS-14, and something always comes up and takes my extra cash. This year, I decided that I'm going to make it happen one way or the other, and now am thinking of saving a little longer and going thermal.  Like you, my big fear is dropping over $5K for one that will be trumped by something even better at half the cost in six months. $5K is about a year's worth of disposable income for me.

Answered this via PM but for others who may be interested:

1) KAC URX accessory kit.
2) Same as #1

It's like suppressors.   I bought about 5 to cover the bases and then I don't check on the suppressor forum anymore.   I'll be happy with what I have as long as I don't know there's something new.  Probably will do the same once my MK II arrives.   I'll stop looking at the new stuff.   As far as I'm concerned, the 2010 F150 is the best they've made and they haven't updated a single thing since.  .....and I'm happy still.

I would bet that you can have more than $2,500 worth of fun in 6 months to offset the price drop(if it happens).

It would take a lot of spilled coyote blood for me to get $2500 worth of fun.

This time last year I was 100% sure I was going to buy a Flir RS in a few months once they were out. By that time other stuff had already started coming out that was better, so I have been hesitant to buy anything.  I do really like the IR Hunter MKII though, it seems to have the most advantages currently.  Can it store multiple zeroes for different rifles?

If you count clicks I can store infinite zeros.

So I take it that's a no then on having built in memory to store them?

In some of the videos for the MKII units, the reticles appear to change  as you zoom in or out such that  horizontal lines disappear.  Is this the recorder not picking up the reticle, or do some of the horizontal lines disappear from view through the scope as you soon in?

The reticle changes. Nothing to do with the recorder.

I have a MK I, and the reticle changes scale as I zoom in, mimicking a FFP scope.  This is a good thing.    Just to be clear, are you saying that when you zoom in on a MK II you sometimes/always loose some of the horizontal lines in some reticles?  That would not be a good thing, if true.
