[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Airsoft grade IR devices on real guns? (Page 24 of 36)

Quoted: Why do you think you couldn't? Quoted: Quoted: Question on using the SG units, would you be able to use these at a NV class or has anyone done that already? Why do you think you couldn't? It's my understanding that the IR devices from US makers are FDA approved - perhaps I'm wrong on that. |

Quoted: Figured because these devices were higher powered and aren't FDA approved that it might cause an issue. It's my understanding that the IR devices from US makers are FDA approved - perhaps I'm wrong on that. Plenty of civvys have full power units. Legit and via dubious sources. I don't think anyone checks. All NV shoots I've done lasers are considered same as a loaded gun. You don't point them at anyone. |

The FDA creates the guidelines which laser devices must abide by since they're "medical devices". FDA compliant lasers that are produced to their standard which are civilian legal are generally considered to be "neutered". |

You don't point them at anyone. If your laser isn't pointing where your gun is aiming, that might be a bit of an issue. The point is a bit moot as standard safety practices should prevent your fp laser from hitting someones eyes as it would mean you're flagging them pretty egregiously. |

I like taking backups to a class I'm paying for. I know these Somo and IS units are stepping up their game but atleast buy two if you're paying for training. To put things into perspective, I just signed up for my first 3 day nvg class. All in after gas, hotel, and tuition I'll likely be around $1400-1500. Rather than sitting on the sidelines aiming passively or not being able to experience the entirety of training, take some insurance along with you. I have a few months to prepare.. I'll be using the PH CTF2 on my main, and have yet to purchase a secondary. These options are looking mighty tempting! |

TBH, the amount of active aiming we did in the Greenline Tactical course was not a whole lot. Did a few runs of the X box drill, few runs with it at about 7 yards to work on holds, and then we did combination of passive, white light failure drills, and pistol shooting. The competition at the end was active though, and since it was some weak side shooting it did help to have a laser. |

Quoted: Question on using the SG units, would you be able to use these at a NV class or has anyone done that already? If you are spending the money on high quality training, ammo, time away from work or family and possible travel expenses, I would carry at least 1 or 2 complete back up systems pre zeroed and set up and ready to go that have a few (hundred) rounds through them. Gear issues can completely detract and derail a training event. The SoMos seem to work but as explored in this thread they "could" have some issues from holding zero, to breaking and falling off the gun, to the battery recoil short issue. My 2 are fine but seems like a dice roll. Inexpensive Holo/TLR ViR laser can function more than well enough to keep you going in most class as far as active aiming. I wouldn't spend cash on a training school with a SoMo as my only laser option. |
|
Put about 400 rounds through the loaner 2021 unit. Extremely damp and muddy. This had the flickering issue...anyways, I crammed another o-ring into the battery port to snug it up and go figure it was GTG with no loss of zero or flickering. No fogging in the lense assemblies or anything else to suggest moisture got into it. The plug socket is pretty loose. The Mod Button plug would start to back out every few magazines. Otherwise, color me impressed. |

Found another offer up, Nobuhiro ir laser/ir illuminator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ8TMCQT?tag=arfcom00-20 I haven't tried it and bet its shit, but wanted to see if anyone had taken the chance on them yet. |

Well, when you get into the training issue. Everyone here has made valid points, you just have to decide which COA makes the most sense for you. As far as failures in class, I've seen Steiners have issues too, in fact I've had batt bounce with one myself. Training with this stuff is hard because you may have to travel long distances and/or pay big bucks to do it. Some outfits have rentals so that might be a possible back-up but I wouldn't want to depend on it. Ideally, I would go with the closest venue, simply to hold down admin/logistic costs and spend more on weapons, equipment, and supplies. I think just having the facilities to train in the dark is half the battle; if you can just do that, you can get yourself squared away in many areas, just by being there and seeing what's different from your ready up drills in the back yard. But you ask a very tough question here. And I am torn in trying to answer it. One side of me says it's foolish to spend 1K on just one doo-dad, the other side says make sure all your kit is functional. One side says make sure you have at least one real good one, the other says make sure you have spares. Oy veh. It sounds like you have a very sound foundation of training. Therefore I think you are probably squared away in gun-handling, mag changes, IA drills and the like. Just be sure to practice all of this in the dark. For my first class, I bought a "cheap" Steiner (if you can call 500 bucks cheap), which just got me in the game, with an IR laser. Combined with a Vampire head, I had the bare minimum for class. You can now do that with a Holosun for about 270. That might be the best COA here. As far as SG or IS. IS would probably be out because you can't depend on him to get it to you in a timely manner. SG is totally OOS right now, so probably ain't gonna work there either. In theory, would I trust either one on a back-up weapon? Yeah, I would, just to test them out, but obviously opinions vary. The real joker in the deck here is going to a formal class, because if something can fuck up, it usually does right in the middle of class. So taking a chance with a SG could wake up Murphy. Another COA would be to see if you can borrow someone else's kit, or at least have one spare between the two of you. Some vendors even rent gear on the side. NV capability is just fucking expensive, no two ways about it. Right now SG is good for back-up guns and some training, such as patrolling/land nav, but for NV live fire, Holosun would be the best bet. That might be rapidly changing but we're not quite there yet. |

All three PEQ's have the same specs; it's just the cosmetic details that are different. You have to remember, with an airsoft/milsim background, everything is about a realistic "impression". So if your unit is Devgru or CAG, you try and match the exact same gear they use, hence you have different PEQ models. I just get the plain jane PEQ-15, with the smooth (non-UHP) button because I'm gonna duracoat it anyway. More importantly, get the potting on whichever one you choose. On NGAL vs PEQ-15, this gets into form factor a bit, but also, keep in mind the NGAL laser illum hasn't been made adjustable yet, like on the PEQ's, so I would wait until that is upgraded. |
|
Well in a nutshell, they have been concentrating on PEQ upgrades, and then plan on improving the NGAL. The first improvement batch, say 18 months or so ago, switched to a Crane plug. I bought my first one around this time. The next batch worked on more identifiable clicks for adjustment. Approx a year ago. I bought my second one then. Then they worked to improve the IR illum. About 6-8 months ago Then they added a potting service. About 6 months ago. And that's my third one. I would say still to go, they need to secure the batt housing ground lead with a soldered joint. (Pending) I hope that's my fourth one. |

Quoted: What is potting? https://www.somogear.com/resources/what-is-pcb-potting-customization-services/ What is PCB Potting Customization Services?Potting is typically done directly into a plastic or metal housing which has been designed to hold a PCB and allows for access to properly dispense and degas the mixture through pouring, resulting in superior protection. PCB potting services provide protection against physical stress, thermal shock, chemical exposure, heat, and humidity. Despite PCB Potted, also can't holds recoil firearm, as we design for Airsoft use only, "So We Don't Recommend Potting!!!" We don't provide after-sales service for products damaged by mounting on firearm!!! (holds firearm not only need PCB potting, also need to updated all the inside system ) Remark: PCB Potted Items need about 7 working days to prepare it. |

The new banner on the Somogear website isn't very encouraging. Attached File we shall see. |

Seems like the updated ngal will have a slightly wider illum than the peq? peq: IR illuminator max beam range: ?5.35° (at 30m distance, the max flood beam diameter is Ø2.8m) ngal: IR illuminator max flood range: ?5.73° (at 30m distance, the max flood beam diameter is Ø3m) |
