| I'll be able to get 400-500 yards out of our new property. The way it is sloped (couple hundred feet of elevation change) the whole thing is a back stop. But .50 cal energy still keeps me wary. Though it is tree'd and uphill I was still thinking of constructing a dugout or some such with an overhang for ultra containment. Side question I have is, what is a safe distance to shoot steel with a .50? |

What size steel are you talking about? 500 is kinda close for 50 cal. But if that's all you have, then so be it. I know the 50cal rated steel we have is 3/4" thick and it hangs on blue rigging chain (equivalent of ar500 steel for riggers) at 750. We had a match that it sat at 350yds for a 50cal bonus rifle and it held up fine. So the right steel hung in a way that allows it to deflect energy will be fine. One of the other ranges here has their steel hanging inside a covered impact area. Top and sides are railroad ties, the support frame is 2 3/8" drill pipe. But you can't shoot anything over 338 there |

I just bought a ton of mostly rimfire steel from Atlas Target Works for my family to learn on. And I'm in research mode for the 50 (and other rifle calibers). I am not dead set on needing to shoot the .50 on our property, but if it'd work why not. |

This is what we have for 50 cal 50cal target We don't get a lot of 50 shooters, but so far it's held up nicely |

At my local range I use a hanging gong 3/4" like others mentioned. I've shot it plenty of times at 300yds with no issues. No even a slight dent in the plate with LC, PMC, and Magtech ball rds. That's from a 29" Barrett M82A1 One thing to mention if you're hanging it from a chain... don't miss and hit the chain. 50 is not forgiving when it hits chains. |
