Looking to get a birth day present for someone who is interested in re curve bows. He dose not own a bow, and we both know little about Archery, what should I be looking for? Price limit is around 200$ Edit: He is looking to use this bow for deer hunting. |

He is right eye dominant, so I know to go with a right handed one. I'm not a recurve shooter, but they do not have a draw length like a compound does. Recurves can be drawn to any reasonable length, but the weight changes the further you draw it back. Specs will give you a guideline at known parameter like the one you listed- 58lbs at 28". You'll eventually need to determine draw length to cut arrows, but you can give the bow as a present and deal with arrows later. If you need it, tell him to measure his arm span. I told my son he was getting a custom knitted sweater so I needed his arm span measurement; hopefully not giving anything away. | seven meadows archery has some nice horse bows. The huns etc run 300 and up but their youth bows (all fiberglass wrapped in leather) are about $200. The draw length on the youth is 26" but they can be over drawn by 2-3 inches without issue. Also, primitive style so no shelf=ambidextrous with the addition of a second strike plate ($5). |

That bow would likely work, BUT, if he's never shot one, 50# can be too much for a trad bow!! And, 58" is a relatively short tip to tip length if he has a draw longer than 28" I'd look for something around 40#, then if he takes to this style of shooting, look for a higher weight bow for hunting!! |

Update: I ended up spending a little more money and got him a Martin X150 re curve. |

I haven't gotten around to using it, but I bought a Samick take down recurve last year and got it with 60 and 45 pound limbs. Very nice looking bow |

I've always wanted a takedown bow; with the ATA lengths getting so short though, pretty soon I may not need it.
