Just bought my first bow, used from a buddy. It's a 2014 hoyt ignite. Set at Max weight and had it setup to fit my at 28in draw. Supposedly it's max weight is 70lbs. Buddy gave me 340gr arrows with 100gr heads does that sound about right? I chronoed with that setup at 233fps average. Looking to kill a deer with it eventually. Also it's much easier than I thought I would be when I started shooting it. 3-4in groups at 20yds for my first dozen or so, but it opened up a little more at 30. Now for lots of practice and I'll have it down. It has a pretty basic 3 pin plastic sight

So my questions are:

Is that arrow weight and speed an ok combo?
Worth spending $100-150 on a better sight?
Tips for a new guy?

340 spine or 340 grain?
A new sight wont help as much as a good release, so make sure you're comfortable with the one you have.
Make sure your form is good, but the best tips I can give are have fun and keep practicing!

When was the last time it got new strings?

I'm shooting 340 spine with 100gn heads @65lb and a 31" draw, and get good results.  A good release and sights can help shrink your groups, as well as a lot of practicing.

I'm almost identical to Sierra5 but I'm shooting 350s. Carbon Express Blu RZ 350s to be exact. Everything else is the same. I don't recall if this was with field points are broadhead practice heads. Either way, they're both 100-gr. I use Rage Hypodermic broadheads and they're freakin' awesome. This is with my Hoyt Pro Defiant. Viva la Hoyt!

I agree on the sight. As long as you can see the pins clearly and it's holding true your form is going to have more effect in making repeatable shots. Once you get to where you can hold on the target without moving around then I might consider a new sight. I find that I tend to prefer smaller pins, for example. Some sights have different sizes for different ranges.

I would also find a shop and try several releases if you can. I found that I prefer a thumb release to a trigger release.
