On 2nd inspection it looks like the jag is actually a little chewed up. probably why it didnt go back through. Is this bad for the brass (nickel plated) jag to have a scratch and some damage to it?

Are you trying to pull a patched jag back through the muzzle? Or you just pulling the bare jag out? Maybe it’s hanging up in the gap between the FS and muzzle. Could be getting scratched up hitting the back side of feed ramp lugs when you pull it out.
I always run the patch through chamber and out the muzzle(no “scrubbing”), remove jag, pull out rod, reattach jag with new patch, and repeat.

I don't see any scenario where pulling the jag back through the bore offers any benefits.

What??? Push patched jag through barrel.  Patch falls off. Withdraw rod with jag.

According to OP’s post, the jag doesn’t pull back out.

How did he get it through to begin with?  If he pushed it through, it should still be able to pull back out even if he didn't remove the patch, which he should have, unless he really screwed up the jag and/or rod.  If nothing else, once the jag is pushed through the end of the barrel, remove the jag all together, then pull the rod back out.  If he still can't then either its either operator head space & timing issue or they really screwed up the rod bad, which of course would also likely be related to operator head space & timing issue.

At least he didn't damage his barrel by using one of those "dangerous" bore snakes since those might get a speck of dirt on them & get drug through the bore & REALLY screw up the barrel.

I managed to scratch up the jag somehow and it just wouldn't fit back through. New jag fixed the problem.

Probably a bur from when the gas hole was drilled that scratched the jag.
