| I bought a few boxes of both 75gr and 62 gr Speer gold dot to test for accuracy Both shot great from 12.5 up to 16 inch guns. All things being equal in accuracy which would you pick for general purpose round to have on hand from anything from self defense to hunting deer or coyote. Would you go with the 62 grain to get a bit more velocity for shorter rifles or go with the 75 gr for more energy down range? |
I couldn’t tell a difference on Deer and Hogs. I got the same result with both bullet weights out of a 11.5 and 16”. Im not shooting at extended ranges though. All shots were within 200m. It was unscientific, I shot the animal, it died and I looked at the hole.  From Speer those bullets will expand down to 1700fps. When shooting a bonded soft point I would look at the ranges you expect to been shooting at and see where that velocity threshold for expansion is. It’s a different dynamic compared to OTM or FMJ. |

The 75gr may be great but the trajectory may fall fast past 200 especially from a shorter barrel. Gold Dot loads are not on the fast side as it is. They dont need to be since they expand well at lower velocities but Id want the load better calibrated for my optics. Also I practice with 55 and 62gr so my zero's will be close with a 62gr Gold Dot further out. |

62gr The 75 gold dot is slow, and doesn't have a great BC Both work well. But I'd got with the higher velocity round with less drop for something that might be both HD and hunting I imagine you'll be happy with either one honestly |
