My Fallout inspired retro 50 beowolf is complete enough that it is fully functional. I bought a wood stock set that has a hardened plastic buttplate that looks like a preA1 style plate. This thing hurts. Turkey loads out of a saiga 12 with a steel triangle side folder are less painful. I don't usually struggle with moderate recoil. I can shoot nuclear loads out of my dad's 45/70 all day. I suspect a good recoil pad will solve the problem. I want to get a kickeez grind to fit pad. I'm debating what thickness. A half inch will maintain the A1 length of pull. A one inch will increase length of pull to A2 length. .75 splits the difference. Would the 1/2 inch be sufficient? |
| I use a recoil pad vest that has a 1" pad on the shoulder when I shoot my Beowulf. It reduces the pain to my shoulder pretty well, but the recoil is still so violent that I get neck pain every time I shoot it from the bench. If I were in your shoes I would probably go with the 1" to maximize the cushioning. |

| Indeed, if you are not married to the A1 stock, the Magpul CTR fitted with a LimbsSaver pad does a fantastic job of softening recoil. |

After realizing the thickest pad would give me the same length of pull as an A2, I chickened out and installed the 1 1/8th inch bad. I can always try to fit a thinner pad later. I didn't make it perfect, but given I used a sanding drum chucked in a drill press, not bad! |

+1 for a PAST if you need recoil reduction/pain reduction. I have a thin build (6' 185 lbs) and hard kicking rifles don't agree with me. I put on the PAST and I'll shoot hard hitters all day. My experience with thick recoil pads on the gun butt is about the same as yours. They never seem to reduce recoil enough. |
