Been thinking about this lately… My first AR in the civilian world was a BCM sporting their MCMR rail. Until the end when I got a URGI, all my issued M4’s rocked the DD RIS II. While the DD rail is awesome, it’s a cheese grater, so the smooth MLOK railed profile was a wonderful change of pace and the MCMR was my default choice for years. When the RIS III dropped I picked one up for a pistol/SBR build I was working on and immediately realized I liked the girth of the rail so much better than the MCMR… Oddly in retrospect I should probably have realized this sooner as I’ve always hated the feel of the Geissele Mk16, just because of how skinny it is. Fast forward to a second SBR build and some back and forth Lego changes and I found I really liked the Geissele Mk8 rail. Fast forward and I’ve recently swapped one of my last remaining MCMR rails for a BCM Raider rail and I’m loving that one. So after years of having all or most of my rifles sporting the MCMR rail, I’m down to two with all my others running RIS III, Geissele Mk8, and (now) BCM Raider rails, and I’ll probably swap out the last two MCMR rails soon. So anyway I got to thinking, what rails are you running on your guns these days? Are you standardized and running the same rail across all or most of your rifles, or do you have a mix of favorites? If so what are they? For conversation sake what are your top 3 and what makes them a go to choice for you? For me, in order of preference… 1. DD RIS III… Probably the most robust MLOK rail I’ve run. The thickness means it stays cool longer and (not that I’m likely to ever take advantage of it) flexible if I ever wanted to mount a launcher. If it wasn’t so expensive it might be the only one I ran. 2. BCM Raider… Solid lock up and comfortable (depending on how you grip your rifle). The double walls allow it to stay cool longer, and from the tests I’ve seen the deflection is minimal. Plus I’ve always been a fan of the BCM cross bolt lock up. If I have a complaint it’s that the longest rail is only 13 inches, so I wouldn’t run this on rifle with a barrel longer than 16in. 3. Geissele Mk8 (and Mk4)… Probably the sexiest of the 3. Light and strong, but heats up faster than the other two. I originally only tried this one out when I converted my first SBR to a piston and it wouldn’t quite clear the internal diameter of the RIS III, but I turned out to really like the rail so in retrospect I’m glad. |

FCD or the CMT rails. The barrel nut and locking block and bolt set up is the same. Excellent rails. With my latest build I used a Grifin lo-pro rail. I wanted a tanodized rifle but not one like the G HD's. So I used Griffin for the handguard, the upper reciever, and their ambi lower in Terra Brown. Excellent rail and an excellent lower reciever. |

I have several Midwest rails. Even though I could have bought a complete Larue Stealth, I did not like the rail or rear stock it came with. I just bought a barrel and receiver and built it the way I wanted it. It also allowed me to start out with an A5 buffer kit.
