I'm thinking of something, looking for info as to the legality. I have a brace, I want to remove about an inch from the bottom. Everything south of the red line needs to go. See master class MS Paint rendition below. ![]() Attached File Why not just buy one of the H&R braces? Because I have this one, and it's free. I looked for information on "modifying a brace", "removing material from a brace", etc, and could find nothing. I know ADDING to a brace is not kosher, as in, anything to the rear is considered changing the application of it, it was something from a couple years back. I simply want to chop a bit off. There has to be a ruling on either using the brace "as shipped" or not. No, I'm not going to write them a letter. If there is a ruling on "brace as shipped", a link or other info on it would be appreciated. If I ever sold the pistol it's on, I'd like to be able to demonstrate it was kosher, at least WHEN I did it. Thanks. |

Free amateur internet "legal" advice is only as good as what you paid for it... and it most certainly won't hold water in court. Even if someone online says "go ahead, you're good", are the courts or cops going to recognize the Lawfirm of "Random, Internet, Forum and Dude"? While logically there are things that may make sense in this situation, no one wants to be the legal test subject. Which is probably why you can't find this information on Google. |

What's the worst that can happen? |

I would think that any mod that would make a brace less advantageous to shoulder would be fine, likewise any that would make it easier might land one in hot water, depending. No clue about availability of letters and stuff. One things for certain, don't call or write and ask. |
| All I will say is this: Don't take internet "permission" as gospel to keep you out of jail when possibly facing a three letter agency who cannot consistently interpret their own rule "clarification". Especially when said agency is well known for moving the goal posts at whim to get convictions, and create criminal intent when there was none. |

One of the things that will make this hard to find a source on (e.g. a letter), is because it's unlikely anyone's sought guidance on this topic. Why not? Well, the recent attempted rule making regarding braces contemplated the scenario of braces having material added to them to make them shoulderable, and that making them not a pistol. It also contemplated having features to make it unshoulderable in the design to avoid that categorization. Nowhere that I recall was there concern or discussion about the effects of reducing the size of an otherwise valid brace. In the rule maker's logic, more material = more shoulderable, and that was the issue. Removing material wouldn't lead to a brace becoming more like a stock. So, I wouldn't expect anyone to have sought that guidance. (Those rules are all toast now, anyway. But it's how bureaucracies operate...) But that's my guess why you probably won't find anything about it, or find very little. With the current federal leadership, it should be a non issue. That is not advice, just an observation of the status quo. |

FWIW, I honestly am not trying to make it "more like a stock", I was more interested in contours, silly but truthful. I currently have about 7 pounds of gauze, plaster and ACE bandages on one hand, trapiziectomy, LRTI on De Quervain's sheath repair on left hand. The diagnosis is reduction in pain, but not expected to gain much strength back, so the pistol will still be used one handed. I was simply going for aesthetics. I'll check out the smaller KAK brace. Thanks for the replies. |
