Anyone else prefer their light at 12:00 on a rail? Seems to help with the shadow a bit. Thumb activation on the back is easier. No switches need. Naturally ambi for nearly all well known lights. Thoughts from others? |

| It was pretty popular 15-20 years ago to do that with Streamlight and Surefire pistol lights. Then the trend shifted to higher output, side mounted lights. Now that high output pistol lights are more available, it's good to see it making a comeback. It always made sense, barring the need to mount a PEQ, but now there are even mounts that can raise a PEQ above the height of a 12 o'clock mounted light. |

The X300T makes it an attractive option when an MFAL isn’t needed/required. All of my rifles not equipped with MFALs have 12 o’clock mounted X300Ts. Wish Unity still made the EXO, think I’m down to my last one. Attached File |

| I am using the Holosun PiD duals on ppc and 300blk pistols. I like the light and laser options very much at 12oclock. Might move other light to that position but the are already at 1-2oclock so… it may take a wild hair on existing setups. New set up, yep, 12. |

TLR-RM 1 or 2 (with green lasers) at 12:00 for everything short in 300blk.   Green laser at 12:00 is also nice because similar to LOS, a bullet will intersect with the laser twice with a shorter zero. Romeo 4T or 4S with Vortex Micro 3x FTS magnifier works out well. You don't see too much of the laser on top of the light.  Even 22's with Romeo 5XDR's (2moa65/moa circle) get cheap green lasers on risers to match the 300's because .22LR is a hell of a lot cheaper than 300blk!  I have several other Streamlights (without lasers) on several other uppers at 12:00 as well. |

I started doing that years ago, mostly because I was using a pistol IR laser/light up top with a PVS14 on a very short .22lr SBR. I got to appreciate the symmetry - everything to how it lays in the gun case to whether I want to activate it with left or right hand thumb. Light and laser up top makes sense to me than having it off kilter on only one side. I wound up putting high output pistol laser-light combos top dead center on most of my short range / home defense guns.

But here was my pro/con list - X300 @ 12:00 I like this setup for the following reasons and use it in conjunction with the Daniel Defense Front BUIS which helps protect the light battery door from hard impacts and shield against accidental activation. Pros. + Ambi switches - Press forward (towards muzzle) on rocker for temp activation + Integrated mount - No extra cost / weight to purchase separate mount + Lightweight: 4 oz (including mount and batteries) + Low Profile: Doesn't add any bulk to profile and no chance of light backsplash off barrier + Bright (especially the x300 Turbos) + Suppressor or Barrel Shadow: at 6:00 so doesn't cast a shadow in field of view + Can be used on / moved to a pistol also + Tool-less removal for "A" variant (change batteries, etc) + Cost: $220ish from some Arf vendors Cons. - No go if you use 12:00 mounted IR laser - Rocker switch sucks for constant on (very stiff). I don't use constant on but still ... - Must remove light to change batteries - No lockout mode - I don't prefer the sight picture using this setup with LPVO at lower magnification levels. No issues with 1x RDS |

Yeah it feels very intuitive to me for how I like to position my hand, as long as the rail isn't too long and the light isn't too far forward. I like to have a VFG where I wrap my fingers partially around the grip and the rail with the rest of my hand coming over the top and my thumb rests pretty close to where the button is anyway, so why not? Also feels a little more intuitive to have your light in line with your point of impact instead of getting used to aiming to the side of where your light is pointing. And if you're a husband and wife who both practice to grab the same firearm, where one of you is left handed and one is right handed, then being ambi is helpful. |
