First off, be advised, these are velocities from my rifles... and as such there is an excellent chance that "Your Mileage May Vary".

In other words, these figures are meant for a general comparison of various OEM factory loads ( as well as some different years of production )  from the 2 same rifles throughout the testing.

Currently there is over 100+ different factory loads velocities listed.

As a double-check... I have been firing the same batch of GECO OEM loads as a "standard" to verify the chrono is up to snuff.

I will note, while some of my velocities shown may not match other results from the vast internet.... please remember that no two rifle barrels are the same. For all I know, my barrel might be a "fast" or "slow" barrel... as well as some of the other testers on the internets barrels.

This link helps explain / demonstrate, or show the dramatic differences possible in the "no two barrels are identical" phenomenon. The article is about reloading, but shows how different barrels can be, even in identical barrel length and manufacturer.

Why Ballisticians Get Gray... by Dave Andrews

Enough YMMV stuff...

Here is the info.

I will list rifle specs first....

16" BCM upper with V7 barrel ,quote.."Manufactured from Rockwell C 30-32 Hardened 416R Stainless Steel. These barrels feature 1:7 improved Polygonal Rifling, V7 Match Chamber, while being V7 Ultra-Match Lapped." ( cut n' paste... easier then me explaining ) Free Floated, BCM Gunfighter MOD 0 Comp, H2 Buffer , FA BCG.

20" PSA 5.56 NATO chamber, 410 SS, CHF, USGI A2 Free floated, FA BCG

2ea 10 shot groups... for a total of 20 rds. per rifle.... Chronograph...Competition Electronics ProChrono Digital Chronograph .... Velocities measured 15 ft from muzzle...Temp. 82-88 degrees... Elev. approx. 232 ft.

The Chrono is not the best, but has proven to show repeatable results from the same lot of GECO and Fed. Tipped Varmint, over the span of months, every time

As I add ammo.... you will see items with no data, that is because I haven't gotten time to input the data.... life really gets in the way of my shooting....

I will add more data as I can....

Please if you have a specific load that you would like to see tested, just ask... if available I will be happy to test it...

I have more data to add, please allow a little time to post it.

mcantu....Still haven't found any CBC 62gr around..Lol

Blain.... I am going to order more Fiocchi 55gr PSP when I see it, I am still curious if I had a slow batch.... BTW, I have seen "somewhere" that the PSP is a Hornady SP, have you ever read that ?

Thank you for posting this!

I'm surprised at the Fiocchi 40 gr V-Max velocities. They advertise 3600 fps and it certainly seems "hot" through both my 16" and 20" barrels.

Also surprised at the small spread with LC XM193  between barrel lengths.

Good info.

eta.. Also thanks for confirming how underpowered the PMC Bronze 55 gr is loaded.

how did you find the accuracy of the Australian Outback 69gr SMK?  i shot some today and its the most accurate load i've ever found for my 20" Steyr AUG.  a 20 round group had a mean radius of 0.54"!

I had good results with the Outback 69gr at 100yds, frankly the 69gr SMK is a great bullet and it shows every time I shoot it.... I am hoping for even better results with the 55gr Blitz load.

I will have results for the Nosler 69gr coming up.

On a side note... the 168gr SMK .308 was, IMHO, loaded to hot for use in a M1A.

I can give you this data.

These numbers are based off 5 shot averages of 3 different versions of the SSA 70 TSX based om when they were made. 14.5" BCM Barrel. 16" barrel was used on the 2015 version.

Old 70gr TSX (before Nosler buyout) 14.5" Barrel

2705 fps

2014 70gr TSX (After Nosler buyout) Purchased in November of 2014. 14.5" Barrel

2620 fps

2015 70gr TSX (These were bought this February). 16" Barrel. I am not the only one who received these as others have reported the same terrible numbers.

2444 fps

Great info. I LOL'd at the 55 grain nasty Guatemalan ammo comment. I bought some of that back when it was everywhere, 2003 or so? I still have a can full of it.

I noticed the SSA 5.56 64 grain BSB ammo was really slow. I just ordered 240 rounds of it and I was hoping it had more zip than that. Sure doesn't look like it's loaded to 5.56mm pressure.

It is with great regret, that I must say that, in my rifles, most all of the Nosler and SSA OEM ammo ( SSA is Owned by Nosler ) fall well short of their published velocities.

But... the bullets are fantastic, so the 64gr BSB doesn't need a ton of velocity to still work well.

Added data for a variety of inexpensive steel cased, as well as SSA 70gr, 55gr TSX,  Noveske 60gr BGT,  Barnes 52gr,  ADI 55gr Blitz,  Rem. Hog Hammer,  Norma TAC / GECO.... again ! ,

Fed Fran. will be in the next group...I will show the complete list later.... as it is getting late"

I will note... the steel cased ammo had decent speed... but sometimes not enough "gas" to function 100%

I hate to hear that. The thing is, I bought several hundred of those 64 grain bullets from SPS probably two years ago, and I've only reloaded a handful of them. I was hoping the SSA load would be a good round to keep for a defensive load, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When I get the time to do it I can work up a handload that performs better than the SSA factory round.

ETA- That's some great info you've taken the time to post!

Please bear in mind that your ammo will still work as designed, just not as well at the absolute MAX. distance where the extra 250fps would help, IMHO you are only losing about 20yds max'ish.... and you are still most certainly far better off with that ammo then numerous other SD rounds.

The BSB bullet is not designed for max distance anyway.... its BC kills its speed quickly.

So don't feel undergunned at all.

Updated.... I just ran it on a Ballistic Calculator.... and the SSA / Nosler load at 2570fps .... you should be GTG out to approx. 300 yards, that being the max. distance that the bullet needs ( 1600fps ) needed for the bullet to work expand.

The Beck Ammo Winc. ( expensive ) load is GTG out to approx. 350ish yards from a 16" ( at 2860fps ).... and 375 yards at 2940fps from a 20" barrel.

Soooooo, IMHO.... you are not undergunned at all. Most people do not use a Blind Barrier bullet out at 300+ yards.

Sadly a lot of 77gr loads have surprising low velocities. SSA's is even  marketed as a Mk262 clone....

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

Cool thread and great info.

Did some 75g Gold Dot last week and got an average of 2622fps out of my 16" nitrided barrel.

72* at sea level/Pro-chrono

Results from last week:

Wolf Gold --3150 average/22fps ES

Lake City XM193--3272 average/48fps ES

PMC Bronze 55g--2987 average/126fps ES It was all over the place.

I'm chronoing some 64g gold dots tomorrow and using both my 16" PSA nitride, and my 14.5" BCM CL.

Interesting. Those all look high to me. .223 75g going 2622 out of a 16inch?

I agree.

The pmc clocking in at nearly 3k is the one that really makes me wonder.

Just got this chrono, and haven't compared it with other chronos for accuracy, nor have I compared this barrel.

I'm using 124g hst's out of a g19 as a base which is consistently around 1150fps.

I'm starting to wonder if this chrono's accuracy drops with higher velocities, and am curious what numbers I get tomorrow.

I would expect maybe 2500 fps from that load out of a 16" barrel. Something isnt adding up.

Results from today.

80* with the sun going in and out of clouds.

16" PSA melonite barrel and 14.5" BCM CL barrel. 5 shots each.

PMC Xtac 5.56 62G Green Tip:
16"--2990fps/ES-60
14.5"--2856fps/ES-24

Fed. 5.56 62G XM855 Green Tip:
16"--3027fps/ES-62
14.5"--2941fps/ES-19

Wolf Gold .223 55G:
16"--3149fps/ES-45
14.5"--3037fps/ES-62

Gold Dot .223 64G:
16"--2785fps/ES-41
14.5"--2675fps/ES-37

Still seems a little high to me.
Test again with the HST's and they seem right on the money though.

Will test my 8" 300BLK and my 11.5" Draco next weekend.

Great work.  Thanks!

The CBC 77 grain Sierra MAtch King is well worth testing.  I shoot it at 1000 yards all the time.  Clocks 2870 fps from my 20 inch Wylde 1-8 barrel.  About 13 x 18 inch ES at 1000 for ten shots.  Sometimes less.  Alot depends on calling the windage.  Always under 1.5 inch MOA at closer range.
