I know it is probably something pretty simple that I am doing wrong. In order for the rail to slide onto the barrel nut and be aligned correctly, one of the barrel nut fins/spikes has to be in the 12 o’clock position. But in this position the gas tube can not slide into the upper receiver.  Because the fin/spike is in the way. What am I overlooking?

That seems odd. Looks like your only option is to torque the nut down to see which nub is in the way and remove it.

You need to torque it until the cutout lines up to allow the gas tube to fit. Torque should be at least 30 up to 80 ft lbs. if you can’t line it up in that range there are shims you can buy to help align properly. Same concept at the standard barrel nut used with plastic hand guards.

Time the barrel nut to allow gas tube passage. IIRC the rail goes on offset, then twists back into position once fully seated. Look inside the rail and see if there is a cutout running around the circumference.

After twisting the rail into position, tighten the bolts on the bottom.

That makes sense. Maybe he does not have the nut far enough in to get to that part. I can't remember those handguards.

I am having the same issue. Bought a TRX extreme II battlerail that did not come with a barrel nut. I tried the standard barrel nut, the rail was too small to fit over that. Bought the TRX barrel nut and now the rail won’t twist into place once over the barrel nut. How did you end up getting your rail on? I emailed Troy to see if they have any suggestions.

You are correct. It goes on offset, and then rocks over about one tooth when fully seated
Something clever belongs here.

I just did one. It was pretty easy if you just barely start all the screws. Then it snagged a little slipping over the nut but snapped in and then timing it was easy.

That sounds about right, mine simply won’t rock one notch over. Weirdest thing ever.

Are you also using the TRX barrel nut?

I remember thinking wtf is the problem here? While installing that rail a while back. I’m just a moron though.

I believe you must use the TRX's supplied barrel nut.

The TRX slides on and then rotates to align it. Ot seems odd but, that's how she rolls. If you look inside the rail and/or fiddle with the rail and nut you'll figure it out.

So weird, my rail does not want to twist at all, even with none of the mounting screws in. Yes, I used a TRX barrel nut. Currently speaking with Troy as they asked for photos. I may need to send it back to their factory.

Update, Troy industries has asked me to send the rail back for them to look at.

No, the flat.void between the barrel nut prongs, has to to TDC and lined up with the gas tube channel in the upper receiver.

As stated, barrel nut is first tighten to 35ft lbs with not only moly lube on the threads, but moly lube on the flat of the barrel extension front face to mating flat on barrel nut, and then barrel nut torqued to no more than 80FLlbs to index barrel nut void between spines to upper receiver gas tube channel. If you can not index barrel nut without going over 80ftlbs, then back barrel nut off, and try again.  If still a problem then once again with back off, and retry again.

Now if you still have problem, then front face of barrel extension socket of upper receiver will need to be lightly faced and squared, to allow barrel nut to index correctly.
And no, do not install shims between between barrel extension socket and trunion mating surface, since will have back side of barrel extension recessed into socket far enough, with chances of the front of the carrier crashing into the inside face of upper receiver and not the hardened barrel extension isntead.

Here, we have front of upper receiver barrel socket being faced to true with upper receiver.

And same can be used to face the upper receiver barrel socket the few thousands that may be needed for barrel nut to index correctly as well, if moly grease is being used, no burs on mating surfaces, and even a few retorqing of the barrel nut is still not allowing it to index correctly.
