I drilled and tapped the tube for a sling stud so I can mount the bi-pod. |

| wormydog, where bouts in OK are you located. i'll actually be down in Tulsa for the next couple of days. The name wormydog brings back memories of a CD that I have that was recorded there of Cross Canadian Ragweed. Great CD. I'm located in KC but get down to the OKC/NORTH 35 Corridor fairly often. Those pics make me want to drag mine out and shoot some coyotes.......GS |
So maybe I am missing something...but why shoot the coyotes? My aunt and uncle do this here in NE and they try to justify it by saying "well, they bite the cow's legs and such.." although where they hunt is far far away from any cows or farms. Personally with THEIR situation (not anyone on here) I think that they just like roaming around in their trucks in the country using the radio and shooting at animals. I can understand the rush and thrill of something like that, but at the end of the day it is just killing an animal for nothing more than getting kicks. They also say "you should see the ones WE shoot, they are sickly and are about to die". Even if this is the case why not let them live out the remainder of their life just the same? When humans are sick, should we have this same mentality? Same could be said with the over population 'argument' I have heard. Anyways, I am honestly just wondering what you guys do with these coyotes when they die or why you hunt them in the first place? Don't think I am comparing you with the statements above, that is just what I have heard regarding coyote hunting. I guess I have always had the impression that we should only shoot what we are going to eat, or utilize in some important way. And maybe you are doing something along these lines. Not trying to start an argument by any means, I am SERIOUSLY just wondering. Hopefully people on here can read my entire post and understand my question/viewpoint before calling me a pussy or whatever.

This has long been a rule in my family and I remember watching one of my uncles eat a blue jay he shot for fun. Grandpa didn't think it was amusing. On the other hand coyotes can be a pest or vermin at times depending on the situation. If their numbers are too high they will limit the survival rate of young deer and cattle and many urban areas are finding that the family pet is just coyote snacks. Judging from the number of kills shown in the post above I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they have a coyote population problem in that area. |
| alot of areas are just as overrun with coyotes as they are deer. ive yet to have a farmer tell me i couldnt hunt coyotes on his property. most farmers consider them vermin, and a threat to livestock. i hunt with a group and someone always skins and peddles what weve killed providing it isnt mangy. im new to hunting and i wondered the same thing, i dont see killing for pure sport either. the pelts are put to use. |

22" Remington R-15 with Leupold VX-I 4-12 x 40 scope. Wolf Eyes light is on there just for fun. It's a rechargeable 700 lumen monster though.

We aren't just doing this for fun. We have guys that drive around in pickups wiht greyhound dogs in the back and sick the greyhounds on coyotes. the coyotes don't stand a chance. That is cruel, brutal and i hate it and the people who do it. We do have a "strong" coyote population were i live and with 600 head of cows with almost half calving in the fall and half calving in the spring, it is just part of it that we are going to lose newborn baby calves to coyotes or wild dogs. A steer sold to market is bring $500-$700. If we lose just 10 calves a year to coyotes (its more like 30 calves/year) then we are losing $5000-$7000 a year! in these tough economic times thats some serious loss. Also when blackpowder hunting once i watch as three wild dogs chased down a doe. Waited until they were for sure gone, as i only had my muzzelloader 1 shot, then walked to my pickup, got my bushmaster, drove the creek and saw the dogs eating a doe and her fawn. Killed two as they stood and got the other one the next day. Same thing happened a month ago with a pitbull and a new born calf. If those dogs are really that hungry then ya they are starving and i'm putting them out of their misery but more importantly i am saving myself money by not letting it happen again, with that dog anyways. $15 box of ammo to save $5000 in calves?? makes sense to me |

All of those coyotes were shot on my farm in cenral OK. I dont know any farmers here in stillwater except for one and he doesn't want me to hunt because he has it leased out to someone else but he doesn't mind if i go shoot. I try to go home once a month or so and thats why those pics are a month apart. 6 of those coyotes are my brothers, 5 are mine. It isn't fair because he feeds cows every day. Although the last time i was home I killed three, the last three in the snowy pic, so i catch up quick. We saw 8 that day alone. And that was only on a third the land we own. My G-ma and my dad feed the other two thirds and see just as many somedays. |
