Ok guys, this is my first post here @ AR15 and I thought that I'd post some pix and ask a couple of questions. First the questions with img(s) linked: As you can see, this is my SGW/OLY lower XM15A1 w/X+4 digit serial# CLICK ME FOR IMAGE. Have you guys ever seen a selector like this? CLICK ME FOR IMAGE Is this a Colt upper/barrel? CLICK ME FOR IMAGE Yes, I know, that flash suppressor is up close and personal. You really don't know how worn something is until you get all microscopic on its ass. ANOTHER IMAGE ANOTHER IMAGE ANOTHER IMAGE This weapon was given to me when I returned from Panama(OJC) in 1990. I grew up in a family full of combat vets WWII/Korea/Vietnam, with even more (uncles) that were in WWII/Vietnam as well. Anywho, this was either my blood uncle's or one of my extended uncle's rifle. It's definitely original retro. Hope that I didn't violate some sacred rite of posting by posting this as my first post. |

That upper is Colt and VERY retro! The barrel is probably a replacement, though. I've never seen an upper that bronze. That is VERY cool! ETA: For future reference, this particular thread is for real M16/M16A1s. You can post pictures of your personal AR15s in either of the tacked picture threads, or start a new thread. Have that look for sure. The Stoner 63 had a gun pod built around it, so one wonders whether or not similar tests were conducted by RIA. Also could have been special test variants to allow for stress testing. Do you have any more pictures of the M75 and other automatic grenade launchers in the second to last pic? Where is this museum? |

For remote controlled planes.... sorry I had to.. .223 is not a suitable round for aircraft. .30 cals are lacking, and .50's are about the effective minimum, especially for vietnam-modern era jet planes. |

The following are pics taken from a Marine (my father) in Kilo Co 3/9 3rd Marines near the DMZ in 1967. This pic is his flak jacket. The small hole in the shoulder area is the exit hole of a 7.62 projectile. He was in the prone position after an ambush and the bullet entered under the flak vest and traveled just outside his body and exited in that spot.  This is a member of K 3/9 wading through water with an M16A1 near Ca Lu.  My dad's M16A1, picture taken at Con Thien. When he arrived in VN he was issued a NIB M16A1. There were several Marines trading in M16s for A1s that day. He said there were horror stories abou the M16, but he never had a problem with the A1.  He also carried an M79 for about three months. This was pic was taken at Con Thien.  The "new" grenades he was issued. Both Lemon and Baseball Grenades, pic taken near the Rockpile.  This pic was obviously taken rear the Rockpile before a patrol.  |

Here are some pictures from the US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. They have a nice setup there. The museum isn't huge, but they have a nice collection of firearms. Outside, they have just about every type of armored vehicle and artillery piece. Sorry for the poor quality of some of the pics. They were all taken through glass. M16A1/M203 (Stoner 63 too)

Great pics, PirateEC! Thanks for sharing. I especially liked the ones of the slab-sided Model 601. Good shot of the AKs, as well. I have a Polytech Legend that looks exactly like that Model 56, although not as worn (safe queen). (Did you get any pictures of the armor during your visit?)

I have made a small mistake, I have learned that I have to post here.... Just a question, are you a little crazy with your price ? I have received some years ago this one    Nut I am leaving in Switzerland and as I have jsut order an SDI M4 14,5", I was loocking on the AR15france.com for some information and one told me that it's not so common |

What's up with this? Looks kinda unstable. The mounting uses the M63 AA base too, which is interesting. |
It was used in defensive positions in Special Forces camps early in the war. That's all I know. |

That's a bad-ass picture! All XM177E2s with 30 round mags, STABO rigs, jungle boots with Panama soles. Obviously pretty late in the war. Man, some of those tribesmen (or Nung Chinese?) are so young. They look like kids. Again, great pic! |
| I could be wrong, but it seems I remember reading somewhere that there were some early attempts in the field to modify AK47 mags for use in the M16. "Why can't WE have a 30 round mag? like them?" led to the early experimental mags. Makes me want to play with one myself. I know SOCOM did the same thing recently in Afghanistan, but with a 7.62x39 chambering, but apparently the feed angle is an issue. Cool photo - really a WTF? kind of photo. I would guess you'd have to add material to the feed lips or bend them closer together to feed 5.56 - IIRC, the difference in overall length of the rounds caused problems. I bet the brass weren't thrilled either. |
I figured that you could cut down a steel 20 round mag and use the top part, and cut down an AK mag and weld the two together. There wouldn't be much point in doing it, aside from proving it can be done, and maybe even having something unique. |

The first photo is of either RT Idaho or RT Sidewinder from CCN, MACV-SOG, circa 1971 or '72; if it's Idaho, then those are Vietnamese team members. I think Sidewinder's indig were Yards. At any rate, the American pictured is One-Zero Lt. Ken Bowra. The second photo is of One-Zero Bob Graham and one of his Yards from RT Pick of CCS. Here's a few pics I pulled from Jason Hardy's book, SOG: Team History and Insignia of a Clandestine Army. Robert Castillo of RT Idaho, CCN, 1971.
