| I haven’t followed mags and prices for some time. I don’t see the prevalence of low cost aluminum mags like D&H were a few years ago. Have they been picked over due to impending bans or have the pmags just won the market over? |

The market for cheap aluminum magazines has fundamentally changed. While you can still find them, the days of $7 D&H specials are largely over for a few main reasons: 1. The Exit of Okay Industries The biggest shift was Okay Industries leaving the civilian market. Their SureFeed line was the benchmark for quality aluminum mags. With their departure, a massive amount of high quality, low cost supply disappeared. While D&H and Duramag still produce aluminum options, the loss of Okay Industries removed the primary source of downward price pressure. 2. PMAG Price Parity Magpul has essentially won the volume war. Because they produce polymer magazines on such a massive scale, they can keep prices very stable. Currently, a Magpul PMAG Gen 2 often costs less than a quality aluminum magazine. Most casual buyers now choose polymer because it is more durable in common use and generally more reliable than budget metal options. 3. Localized Ban Surges As you mentioned, we're seeing a "checkerboard" of state laws. Recent legislative moves in states like Virginia and Minnesota have caused localized buying panics. When a state faces a potential deadline, residents buy up the most affordable options first, which thins out the national inventory of budget aluminum mags and keeps prices higher. |

| I was on team PMAG until I was looking down the barrel of the VA ban and thinking about using what I currently have for the rest of my life. I thought about all my old tools and things from 30+ years ago and how the plastic has oxidized and lost its rigidity. I'm prioritizing metal mags and rebuild kits. |

GI aluminum is my go to. If I were buying today I would buy Brownells, their quality seems to be on par with Okay's in my experience. PSA sells rebranded D&H mags and I have a handful of those, but 2 of them were tight in one of my lowers so I sanded them till they fit, use them for range mags, and don't buy the PSA branded ones any more. |
