Streamlight is Unreliable? (Page 1 of 2)

I have the Streamlight Protac HLX and RM 1. The tail cap switch starts to become unreliable after a little bit of shooting. They don’t seem loose. To fix it I have to loosen and retighten the tail cap. Anyone else see this? |

Streamlight customer service has been really good for me for the mostpart. But it sounds like you should just throw it in the closet instead. Are Streamlights perfect, no, but I've yet to find the perfect light. One of my Surefires once just refused to turn on for no apparent reason. A few minutes later it fixed itself. I'll just hope it was an undercharged battery and doesn't repeat. For the money that ANY of these cost, the lack of reliability is pretty absurd in my opinion. |

I noticed a similar occurrence with my ProTac HL-X (handheld version but also have the rail mount HL-X and a PolyTac). The light stopped working with very little use, less than an hour total runtime. It sometimes just will not work with certain batteries. It may work when the battery is first installed then stop working. Loosen tail cap, retighten and it will usually work for a bit. I think the problem isn't in the tailcap but is the contact for the positive side of the battery. The batteries have to have a very pronounced button top. The Streamlight 18650 batteries work, I have problems with Surefire and Orbtronic batteries and some others I can't recall. The three Streamlight models I have, the positive battery contact is inverted from pretty much every other light I have seen. It sits just slightly below flush of a plastic insulator. The contact probably starts out flush but creeps in under tension from the battery button top and the body/shoulder of battery then rests on plastic insulator causing a loss of contact with positive side of battery. Loosen cap, contact creeps back up, retighten cap, positive makes connection again, rinse and repeat. Mine seems to be battery sensitive and need a pronounced button top. I'd like to try a spacer between the battery and contact to confirm this. Spacers Attached File |

So, seems like tolerance stacking issue combined with connector being either bound or a bit weak? Shaving down the protective insulator a touch to allow for greater battery positive cap heights could be a solution? Edit to add, for the record, i''ve only ever used streamlight, surefire and energizer cr123 batteries, and streamlight and surefire 18650 batteries. |

It screws in and out using something like a very sharp tipped thin pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers or something. I have one I thought was dead and adjusting that piece fixed it a couple years ago with nary a problem since. |

I’ve had more Surefire fail on me than stream lights. Hell I had a tlr with a broken tail cap that still worked until I got it fixed. I have a handheld with a usb charger built in, that has been beaten and dropped against all sorts of stuff and the anodizing is starting to wear. It’s surprising how well it’s handled the abuse for maybe the last four years. |
|
I’ll say this about Streamlight. About 13 years ago I bought a TLR-2 used, probably from someone here on ARFCOM. Earlier this year the light started getting a little weak so I replaced the batteries. Mounted it back on my CZ and took it to the range. Fired off about 15 rounds and noticed the hinge on the battery cap had broken. I get on Streamlights website and put in a service ticket, describing the problem. I print it off and send it in along with the TLR-2 back to them. They sent me an email letting me know they received it. About a week later they returned it to me fixed and it works perfectly. They didn’t charge me a dime. The only thing I was out was what it cost me to mail it to them. You can’t beat that level of service in this day and age. |

Both of my HLXs needed orings to function reliably. Be it turning off and on with the tailcap button OR, not randomly turning itself off and on while firing. They work but I would never put one of those on a duty gun. My TLR 7sub is solid. |
| We issue streamlight where I work. Their warranty is great, but be prepared to use it. Surefires are definitely more reliable, but for a cheaper option, Streamlight is okay. We have definitely had more issues with streamlight rifle lights than their handgun lights. |

| I trust my Streamlights for home defense and concealed carry, as I've never experienced an issue with any of them (currently five WMLs and one handheld). However, my personal primary and my duty sidearms both have X300Us, and all my rifles except one have Scouts or Mini Scouts. The other one has a Cloud Defensive Micro Rein 2.0 which has honestly been great and has excellent performance, but I want to sell it and replace it with a SF dual fuel turbo. |
| My experience with Streamlight is that they are casual/occasional use lights. For weapon lights or emergency use, I only trust Surefire. |

My 15-25 year old surefire lights are very abused and work perfectly. when I emailed Streamlight customer service a question they responded in less than 24 hours. I would not tolerate that misbehavior, has to be a defective tailcap. get in touch with them I bet they send you a new tailcap. I have 2 ProTac handhelds, a TLR-1, HL-X, a RM-1 and RM-2. all have been flawless so far. when I hit the range the lights are on the rifles, but daytime. so I don't know if there is performance issues during lots of firing, but none of them have failed yet. when I go out with the dogs at night all the lights work as expected. |
The deuce you say.

I bought all my Streamlights from brick and mortar or DVOR (OpticsPlanet). lots of counterfeits out there, you sure yours is genuine? |

Only issue I ever had was busting a door on a TLR-1. Between me and my kid we’ve got multiple TLR-1, TLR-7, TLR RM-1 and multiple Polytech / Scorpions handhelds. All get used. When I was on the FD, that’s all we used. I can remember one Streamlight lite box get lost during a fire. When it was recovered it was a hunk of melted orange plastic but still turned on. Called Streamlight to see about just getting a new shell. Sent them requested pics and they ended up sending us 6 new lights (LED) and a pre-paid shipping label for the melted one. They wanted it for engineering purposes. They “may” not be SF quality to some but they work and they stand behind their products with their customer service. |

| I bought a stream light handheld before I moved to Tx. So at least 13 years ago and it’s my go to light mounted just above my toolbox in the garage. Was just thinking about it the other day and realized it still has the original rechargeable battery in it! Love that light. I own serval of the wml also and all have been good for me. |

| I’ll echo reaching out to them and they’ll take care of it. Battery contact or spring could be an issue. My weapon lights are just used in a recreation and competition capacity but I’ve had numerous Protacs and other models get tortured in structure fires and they keep on ticking. |

I've broken maybe 4 of their tail caps. The design is really crappy, but they always send a replacement free of charge. I put up with it because the length of the light is perfect for my comp but won't be buying any more TLRs I lost both an X300 and VIR to simunition hits and Streamlight didn't ask any questions or charge for replacement which was above and beyond. That was not my experience with surefire. |

Give customer service a chance. I have only used it once but it was quick and responsive, for a thumb screw that didn't match the description from the seller. No mechanical issues over multiple TLR-1 HLs, HL-X rail mounts, and now a couple of the TLR-7s for a couple smaller guns. The TLR-1s and HL-X have seen pretty heavy use across duty weapons and have held up well. No issues trusting them. I do acknowledge that not all products are perfect. But I still use and trust them. YMMV. |

OK, see you later, Redcoat…

I’ve had a total of 3 reins just completely fail on me, two in a Steve Fisher low light course right after they released the 3.0. I’ve sent back a handful of switches for wires failing, more or less you can put one bend in them. If you don’t nail the management the first go, or try to move it later, the wires covers split. All the failures occurred while using the switches “integrated” cable routes. They more or less required harsh bends, but if that’s what they designed it to do, it should be able to do it. That however was on the old bigger switches, not the updated ones. Can’t speak to those. Went back to SureFire and I haven’t had a single light related failure since, and I’m up to probably 7-8 of the turbos. I’ve since heard more complaints through various forums about cloud versus any other brand. Simply put, there is no reason to choose one when more reputable competition exists. |

We issue the Streamlight HLX Great lights overall, EXCEPT, the pressure switches are delicate. Have seen plenty of them crap out over the last couple years across about 75 guns Clicky cap is the way to go. The TLR1 variants are good lights, switch battery cap will break though. It’s basically a wear item. But I buy Surefire myself. Been down the road with Cloud and Modlite, not worth it anymore now that SF has the turbos |

That was not my experience with surefire. Surefire used to have incredible repair and warranty service. Did some oddball repair for me after a short phone conversation about an old 1911 light. Among other repairs of very abused lights. Originally Posted By RacingOrange: Allowing them to replace or fix it is a waste of time?!?! They won't charge you for it. JFC Yes, it’s an engineering issue not a quality issue. After installing a AA in the RM1, I haven’t seen any issues. The HLX is now used as a handheld… |

I have a TLR VIR 2 and the windage adjustment is totally locked up on it. Used on MP5. Need to see about getting it replaced. |
