“Dry Cleaning Solvent”, aka perchloroethlene (“PCE” or “perc”) aka tetrachloroethylene, is an authorized cleaning agent per the M16/M4 TM. It’s excellent for removing old CLP, lubricants etc; it does not really remove carbon or other fouling. It’s good for prepping rifles for painting. Old school, red can, CRC Brakleen is tetrachloroethylene in an aerosol spray can. Most consumer-grade brake cleaners are now non-chlorinated, using acetone, methanol, etc. as primary ingredients. |

| I keep 95% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), carb cleaner and brake cleaner on hand for various cleaning or degreasing tasks. For routine gun maintenance, I use Lucas CLP, Lucas gun oil and white grease. I keep WD40 on hand for the rare occasion that a metal surface gets wet. |

It sucks, so I'm more careful now. And i wear eyeglasses full time, and safety glasses at work. So for me it's easy. |

I degreased a couple buffer tubes with brake cleaner before applying Teflon dry lube. Slick as snot now.  Same thing when rebuilding aluminum 30 round mags. Clean, degrease, dry lube, add Magpul followers. |

I'm not happy until my guns/gun parts are squeaky clean, so I use brake cleaner to hose everything off after I've cleaned (CRC green can non-chlorinated of course). I usually re-lube with Break-Free CLP, but there was a time I wanted to switch to Slip-2000 Gun Lube or EWL until I found out it doesn't lube as good as Break-Free CLP. I have been trying Bore Tech Eliminator and C4 Carbon Remover, but I have not been super impressed with them yet. I'll be getting a bore scope to see if they are doing a good job of cleaning my barrels, but just looking down into them with a flashlight I can still see carbon. |

I really doubt the below statement on Slip 2000 from a practical perspective. I have had more guns/ parts rust out using Breakfree CLP then any other lubricant. I like their powder blast but thats it. Slip 2000 is a solid CLP and has worked for me in extreme operating temps for my AO and is great for longterm storage. The only CLP I like is Shooters Choice FP-10. A good stand alone cleaner and a good stand alone lubricant/corrosion treatment would probably beat most ''do everything'' chemicals. I'd bet Ed's red as a cleaner and a good full synthetic 0 or 5W 20 motor oil would beat most of the tests. |
