Last Apr 15, 2025 I contacted Green Mountain Barrel asking about availability of their # GM-M14 20" M16A1 5.56x45mm, 1:14 twist barrels for my Colt 601 Retro. I'd bought it from the original builder who used a 1:12 twist barrel due to more ammo options. Long story short, after many emails back and forth about availability, production estimates etc, this email finally arrived: ========================================== Green Mountain Barrel Co. I went through this hunt about 8 months ago. Green Mountain isn’t making them and neither is anyone else. There are custom barrel manufacturers that can make them, but will naturally be fairly expensive. I lucked out and found someone on this forum that had a new, unused GM barrel in 1:14 twist and had John Thomas assemble it. Good luck on your search. |

If your dead set on a 1:14 twist barrel there is a 601 clone on Gun Broker for $1500, Green Mountain barrel, Nodak Spud 601 lower, starlightone is the seller, I almost went for it just For the lower but getting it engraved with a pony on it is just a pipe dream now of days, I just used a 1:12 Colt C MP C barrel On my 601 because I have 3 of them. |

I snagged a Satern 601 1/14 barrel about a year ago but don’t see them listed now. It’s stainless steel with a grey cerakote finish though. Not parkerized. That wasn’t an issue for me. It also has the “W” proof mark, which is nice. You could email them and ask directly. They could still be able to knock one out special order. |

If it is not stamped externally with the correct hallmarks and proofs with the correct FSB making a 1/14 barrel is a fools errand. Its like putting a 225 slant 6 in a 68 Charger, if its not a Concours restoration why in the heck would you do that? |

Right, OP didn't mention if he had an original colt 601 upper, if I had an original upper sure I'd be looking for an original Barrel too, on my faux 601 the only 2 barrels I would put on it would be the colt M VP-12 (cast front sight with no drain hole) or the Colt C MP C (1-12) barrel, I won't Put a new aftermarket 1-14 twist on it, I've heard you couldn't hit a VW bug with it (1-14) at 100 yards, never shot one so I don't know If that is true. |
