I want to build a side charger pistol.
I've been looking around and they all seem to run around $350 with a bolt. (Lower end ones anyway)
Either a non-reciprocating with standard bolt or milled with a drilled bolt.

Anyone have any experience with any of these? Reliability and quality? Rep of the companies?
Any information is helpful.

The non-reciprocating ones all look similar:
new frontier $225
spartain $249
integrity $230
gibbz $250
X $300

Reciprocating:
crosshill $349

Reciprocating have the advantage of brass deflecting off the knob. (I shoot left and have had brass from an A1 hit my cheek . .. once)
Non-reciprocating have the advantage of a standard bolt (with their cam pin)

Yeah, it's kind of a $200 option. Hmm . . . that's the same as an SBR ticket . . .

Those are all pretty much the same (I believe that they are all part of small manufacturing group/association.)  They use an unmodified bolt carrier, but a special cam pin, which engages with the handle.  The handle remains out (does not fold) and is above the axis of the bolt.  The receivers are also slick sided, so no shell deflector, dust cover or forward assist.

Slightly more expensive is the American Spirit Arms non-reciprocating side charger.  It uses a standard cam pin, but requires a small notch to be milled into the front end of the carrier (which they will due for a small fee or they will give you the dimensions to have milled or to mill yourself.)  The handle folds down when not in uses, which locks it in place, and it is in-line (vertically) with the bolt.  The upper has a dust cover and shell deflector, but not a forward assist.

Much more expensive is the JP non-reciprocating side charger.  I don't know if the carrier is special (was too expensive to look into), but the handle folds and is also in-line with the bolt.  The upper has a dust cover, shell deflector, forward assist and standard charging handle (it has both.)

My 300 blackout is a side charger  LAR ops-4 model. Mine is the reciprocating left side charge model with right hand ejection. I love this upper! Its different and built pretty damn strong. Few concerns is the charging knob comes loose after shooting it a few hundred rounds but I just hand tighten it so I don't have to use tools when I disassemble it, it may not loosen if you tighten it with a wrench. Secondly if you are one to hold the magazine well while shooting it can get your thumb. I do not shoot that way but friends who have shot it have had the charging knob hit them.

I went with the ASA upper too on the Q10 colt lower SBR build. Its great upper but with the suppress it does make you have grit in your teeth. I can live with it  The side chargers are nice imo but they do cost a little more. I have been thinking about another build with a sider but the funds are not there after these last two.

Cobra Commander built my Q10.... these 9mm make me think of GI Joe and something cobra would have so I had them add the logo when it got its SBR engraving

I like the ASA type but it's $100 extra plus the machining.
I'll probably go with the Gibbz type and mil bolt.
Already have the 10.5" 5.56 SS barrel I got for $79 delivered.
Planning on the VTAC 11" rail with a muzzle device to match. Have to get the rail first to see about the FH clearing it.

Anyone have any experience with the Kineti-Tech two piece muzzle brakes? It should just fit inside and extend far enough out.

Thumbs up on the Gibbz.   Used the G4 Upper on a 300 BLK SBR and I love it.   Fit and finish is fantastic.   I like the non-recip feature but at a lower cost than the ASA.

Did you have any problems with hand guards fitting the upper?  My ASA I had to file down the tabs on the samson hand guard in order to get it to fit. I'm wondering if fitting is going to be the case for all the billet side chargers.

I went Young Manufactiring.  Billet receiver and chrome BCG.  Not cheap, but the quality is untouchable.  I like the charging handle delete as I shoot suppressed mostly.

Those with the ASA, any gas blow back from the charging handle slit on the left side w/ and w/o a suppressor?

Thanks

I run mine with a qbuffer 9mm 8.5 oz buffer and a wolf heavy buffer spring.  I can't have a suppressor yet in iowa, but unsuppressed I get no gas blow back from the slot for the charging handle.

One of the many manufacturers who make the non-reciprocating, above-the-axis, cam-pin-engaging uppers stated in one thread that they are part of a small manufacturing association, in which members share designs.  So, Gibbz, New Frontier, Spartan, Integrity, X Products, Working Mans, Third Degree and possibly others, all work from the same basic design, though I can't say who the originator is.  The biggest variation seems to be the rail option on the side of the X Products one.

I went with the ASA in part because it actually had a shell deflector and (to a lesser degree) a dust cover.  I also liked the locking handing and the in-line (vertically) design.  However, I may try one of these if I ever purchase an SCR lower.  Hmmm ... I wonder if a hand stop mounted on the X-Products optional side rail could function as a shell deflector ...

With my multimount can on the ASA you do get some "grit" in your teeth from the side charging handle but I live with it. The funny thing is it comes and goes. More so when I clean it then when I do not.

I cut a slot in the left side of a conventional slick-sided DPMS upper and use a Young bolt carrier.  Made a filler block for the old charging handle hole.

From the looks they just milled right through the brass deflector.

Had to look real close. Monitor is kind of sketchy with that kind of image. Movies can be a problem.

I want to get the Gibbz since its relatively close to me.  I thought to myself well, if I get it local I can pick the one I want and save on shipping.  Sucks that I have to pay sales tax though.

Contacted Gibbz and they said call before you come over to make sure they aren't out testing and they would pay for the sales tax.  I'm sold, need to find a day to go out there.

Got the rail and HAWG.  The rail mounts JUST fit over the gas block.

Had to cut the indexing pin off the rail due to the width of the non-milspec upper.

The rail on top is just to hold it together until I can tighten everything.

Oh and the fat upper? Yeah, the receiver clamp wont work to hold it to tighten the barrel. Have to see what the LGS can do or get a reaction rod.

Sheesh, try to do something fancy . . .

My feeling is it is more ergonomic. Reaching forward puts your arm in a more powerful position and doesn't require you to remove the rifle from your shoulder. Lots of battle rifles are designed that way.

Drag one up from the past but BCA makes a side charger left or right side. Built a 10.5 stainless Wylde left side charger complete upper for under 250 for complete upper.

Love the left side charger keep my right hand on grip non reciprocating bolt works as bolt release and bolt assist. Do not miss stupid charging T.

I have one of the NFA side chargers for my 762x39 carbine build.  As a former FAL shooter, it rocks.  And on a standard AR all that needs changing to make it work is the bolt cam pin.  Looking at my 9mm bolt, it should Just Work.

I have one of their forward position (more HK like) non-reciprocating side charger 8.5" 9mms, it too rocks.  Been dead nutz reliable with a few factory loads (Privi, Federal, S&B, Wolf, Tula) and my buddy's reloads (he feeds FA Uzis...) feeding from EndoMags.  Worked great in semi-mode on his Colt-mag type M16 lower, but too much bolt bounce with his set up for FA.
