[ARCHIVED THREAD] - SWS barrel nut wrench

Any body know where to get a SWS barrel nut wrench or have one to sell/loan? I tried SWS and they do not have any. Looks like this...

The free float barrel nut pins on an AR multi wrench fit the SWS nut IIRC? I had a SWS hand guard at one time and I'm pretty sure I just used an AR multi wrench on it. The three pins are not going to be as solid of a grab as the wrench you pictured but they should get the job done. If you already have an AR multi wrench you may want to check.

A normal free float wrench doesn't work. The barrel nut is a smaller diameter. The gas tube does not go through the barrel nut. I was able to tighten it with a spanner wrench. thanks.

is yours a 556 rail?

I am in the process of getting a SWS for a 308 and will need a wrench, or something that will suffice for proper tightening without screwing it up

Yes it is 556. I contacted SWS and they didn't have one for an ar15 rail. Google searched, Ebay search nothing turned up. I was able to use the spanner wrench that came with a DD MFR rail. I did have to use shims to get it timed correctly.

My barrel nut looked like this one, not the one in the OP. I used a couple of cut off bolt heads inserted in the large holes and a pipe wrench to loosen. If you are comfortable with not knowing the torque other than “tight”, that would work for putting it back on.
