I'm not a fan of the CLP/3-in-1 products. My reasons are my reasons and won't be debated here. I have a bore cleaner I like to use and a lube I like to use, now I'm looking for a straight rust preventative. What's your recommendation for a rust preventative only? |

Use VCI emitters in your safe and you'll never have rust, whether your firearms are well lubed or not. Forget goldenrods and dessicant, VCI is absolutely superior. I personally use the Zerust VC2-2 capsules and never see rust. Aside from that, I use MPro7 LPx oil and it seems like a very good oil that's great for long term storage |
| I like RIG. I keep a cotton rag soaked with it to wipe down guns. I have a container with RIG that is thinned with mineral spirits. I'll wash dies in straight mineral spirits and then dip them in the thinned RIG mix. The mineral spirits evaporates off, leaving a nice thin even coat of protective grease. It works great. |
| no-ox-1D "A". Product of Sanchem, Chicago, Ill. Will keep cheap steel from rusting in a salt mine. Excellent for long term storage of any ferrous material. I thin some with mineral spirits and work it into a wiping rag then charge the rag with ATF or thicker hydraulic fluid. Guns simply don't rust when wiped down with it. |

I live on the Coast of Texas and Rust is a big problem. I have tried them all over the years and some are good and some not so much. The best I have found is CorrosionX. It has worked for me and I spent a good amount of time on the phone with the developer back in the day before he passed. So far the only change to the product in 25 years is they removed the dye. It was red and now it. regular oil color. I have not had rust problems in years. But thee are just my results. |

corrosionsX on a piece of leather shammy ( about 4" square, kept in a baby food jay when not in use. Coast of Texas on a Ranch and carried everyday but not always wiped down. Trying some StrikeHold on a couple, seems to be doing pretty good. It dries after a couple of days and after 3 to 4 coats seems to hold up well to rain and dew. The CorrosionX has don excellent for years, for me. |

That one crazy test of all the metal pieces. You'll have to das google to find it. Very extensive. 2 of the best I believe were WD40 Corrosion inhibitor and Hornady Oneshot. But those were outside and sprayed with salt water. Inside I would say any oil product will work. I used to clean my shotgun with WD40 and nothing else a LONG time ago before I was told it didnt work. Its perfect still. Winchester 1200 from my Dad. CorrosionX grease or spray. CRC656 or something. We spray our outboard engines down with it. Used to use WD40 long ago. Whatever you got |

Just some thoughts: Be aware anything polar can have an effect on primers. Think how thick do you want the layer of protection to be. Thick enough that it will need degreased before using it again? Eezox is a CLP, however it is one of the very best rust preventative formulas on the market and creeps extremely well. |

When I was a kid I bought something like this for rust. It was a leather shammy in a small jar with a pad containing chemical in the bottom. Was this OG Corrosion X? Your post unlocked a core memory, lol Also, any reason I couldn't use Cx in a barrel bore? |

Storage or use protection? I use VCI bags for some of my stuff. WAY cheaper just buying directly from the company instead of second/third hand sellers. It takes less time to get them out of a bag then a case. |

Boeing Boeshield T-9 is the best pure rust preventative. It dries to a thin waxy film. I use a lot of it on most everything that's susceptible to rust. Fluid Film is also very good, used especially for undercoating cars around here, but AFAIK, it doesn't dry & remains wet. |

RE fluid film As far as sitting on a car all year it gets harder but not hard as the petroleum distillates evaporate. I just redid my vehicles last month and there was still some left from last year that didn’t get abraded by snow, sand and washed off. I have a gallon can of the stuff. I really wouldn’t consider putting it on firearms. |

I'm not sure what you guys are doing with your rifles but I've been out in rain and even wash my guns with dish soap and water and it has 0 sign of rust. I think unless you're seeing it then you shouldn't really worry about it. I mean there's a picture of a dude with an old M16a1 from Vietnam and he's walking around so much with it that the plastic stock degraded more so than the metal. |
