Hey Everyone, I have an opportunity to pick up a Ruger SR-556, The normal 16in version with the quad rail, for just barely over $1k. It looks barely used. Is this a good deal? Any other feedback about the SR-556? I know there’s other, newer, sleeker, and lighter piston ARs nowadays, but I remember lusting over the SR-556 in that full sized poster Ruger sent out. Didn’t know much about it then besides it looked cool, it was piston, and it had a longer hand guard than what most AR manufacturers were using in the 2010s. I know they are discontinued, but it could still be a plenty durable and fun rifle for however long it stays alive |

I wouldn’t. It’s heavy and uses proprietary parts you can’t get. Idk if Ruger fixes these when something breaks or not, but at some point they’ll run out of parts for them too. If you really think you need an external piston (you don’t) I’d look at another model like a Caracal 816 or something. |

Buddy's got one. Works great and is very accurate. For half that price, I'd do it. Being a piston, obviously way less gas to the shooter and it's going to run cleaner when shooting suppressed. Parts are hard to find. I'd build another AR or take an existing one and put a Superlative piston kit on it for the same effect (and spare parts you can stock up on). |

| There was a earnings call a year back and the SR was mentioned. They are sitting on a ton of parts. They could restart production easily with all the extras, but the market isn’t there. Ruger needs high volume to make money. So if you get it, I wouldn’t worry about parts, they are stacked. Is it worth 1k, probably not. It’s a heavy gun. It’s a good gun, but with the weight and proprietary parts making it less customizable, I don’t think it’s worth it. |

The LGS by me just got one that is in nice shape in this week. Its the quadrail version. They are asking 799 for it. "Is it worthwhile today?" This is a question I have been asking myself and searching for opinions on. I came here to ask and make a thread but there already is one. Its been a tempting pick up for nostalgia. I keep trying to remind myself my saint is better, lighter, and paid for. Damn though if the SR556 isn't a sexy looking gun. It would look good with a compM4 on it. I haven't decided to buy it or not yet. Logically it seems that "No" would make sense. If I wanted another flat top rifle I could just go for a BCM upper and an aero lower to maximize my dollars. Better maximizing the dollars is don't buy anything.  I'll think about it more at the gym I guess. Edit for update: Did not buy |
