Retro shotgun project begins! (Page 5 of 28)
To be honest, I haven't looked-up the NSN on that type of sling because both those shotguns are coded as "Excess" and as "Training" weapons. I was a little "Shocked" to find them (The shotguns) myself. Despite what seems to be a fairly widely held misconception around ARFCOM, most (Like 95%) of the NG units I work with have very up-to-date stuff (All MWO's applied ect). THIS particular unit though DOES seem to have some pretty archaic shit (Note the cages of M-60 GPMG's awaiting turn-in in the pic' of the bayonet-lug). I'm just sorry I missed my chance a few weeks back to get pic's of some 'A2's that had Hydramatic lowers on them (They started out as 'A1's 'bout the time I hit Kindergarden!)....those were Anniston rebuilds and I would've loved to have had some pic's of them.  |

IMPULSE BUY! I've fallen victim to my own thread! I couldn't resist two Savage 69 RXL's for $300. I hope I did okay. I haven't seen any for sale before, so I don't know what pricing should be, but two shottys for $300 seems reasonable to me.   I can't tell you how much I should not be spending money right now (my wife could help with that). I guess I should sell a couple toys to fund this before I tell her about it! |

They will be if they function! I am a little nervous after my first experience with Savage shotguns. At least I have headspace gauges and some knowledge of how the Savage action works this time around.
March 2002. The kind member on the FAL Files that sent me a pile of research on US combat shotguns threw in a spare copy he had on hand. I'm damn near unemployed at the moment, so I really ought to digest those articles and post something useful here. I think I've got copies of just about every secondary source on the 77E published in the last 20 years. I discovered there was even a gold plated commemorative version produced! |

They came today...earlier than scheduled.  Function seems good...at least none of the nightmares with the lifter not lifting or the bolt stop not engaging. Action is smooth and everything looks like it's working as it should. The one with the wood fore end passed headspace check easily and is in really great shape. Couldn't be more pleased. The other passed headspace check, but it was a lot closer to being closed. I probably could have closed it all the way with a good whack. I suppose passed is passed, but it makes me nervous. That one has some floral engraving on the bolt, so I was thinking of making this a "His and Hers" set, but I want to be sure it's 100% safe if I do that. I have a GO and NO GO. From what I understand there is no FIELD gauge for shotguns. I have a damn pile of Savage bolts now, so I guess I could swap them around for best fit. Thoughts on this? Am I being too paranoid about headspace? |

Yes, you are. But, if you can swap bolts to get tighter headspace then I'd do it. As long as it won't close on the "no-go" with light preasure, you're fine. General rules for headspace check: clean chamber clean bolt face clean locking surface on receiver/barrel extention remove extractor (can give false reading) **don't force the bolt closed on any gauges** |

Thanks for reigning in my paranoia. I retested, and using light pressure only, it doesn't even look that close. The plate under the bolt went farther forward than on the other, but still a good quarter inch short of fully closing. I will probably retest occassionally, but it seems fine. The "His and Hers" plan is back on! The action of these guns is growing on me...a little. I still think the bolt stop mechanism is stupid, but now that I have a couple with all matching parts and in good condition, they do look a lot more robust. These two cast some light on the problems I was having with the 67. It looks like someone put a 69 bolt in there, which is my guess as to why the notch that the lifter engages wasn't lining up. Paranoia aside, I really like this model. The barrels are short. They don't really look it in the picture, but when I saw them in person I pulled out a rod and measuring tape to make sure they are over 18" (they are 18.25"). Both of these appear to be cylinder bore, so I've ordered some slugs and buck to play with different ammo in them. |

We went through this about three or four pages ago. About 20 people were disappointed. Including me.

I went hunting again last Saturday and stopped at Ahlman's. Couldn't help it, I had to get another one (I used to have a 77B made into a military shotgun clone).  This one is a 77E, with the correct butt pad. I had to trim the shroud off the forend, and cut a poly choke off. But she's pretty close. Next will come the sling swivels and a park job.

They have lots, but not all of them have the right combination of features. Most of the 12ga's don't have the T-slot buttpad, some don't have corncob forends, etc, etc. Any would be a good starting point though. Mine is a 16ga  , not 12ga. But I don't care because I can get 16ga buckshot from Sportsmans Guide no problem.I was even flirting with the idea of doing it with a 20ga because that's my favorite. In the end, it was the buttpad and the $99 price that convinced me on this one. |

Nice score. I would like to get one marked 77E some day, or possibly a 69R, which is the police model which has the correct front sling swivel. All I would need to do to that would be to park it and swap the stock. The damn thing about those buttpads is they were obviously nothing unusual at the time. I have a .22 that has one, and both the RXL's I just picked up also have the T vent pad. |
I made one of those. I found an Ithaca 37 Dearslayer Special without teh ghey game scene. 20" rifle-sighted barrel, Tac-Star tube extension (closest knurling on the bushing), Clark Custom Shotgun Magazine Band , and a Duckbill Choke from Kevin Dockery at Greatlakes Arsenal. I stamped U.S. into the side of the receiver between the barrel and magazine tube then parked it. |
stoner63a, how did you keep the barrel indexed in the receiver? I have an identical project going now, even have the tac-star extension. I planned on having the clamp machined with a way to index the barrel. Haven't gotten that far yet. Also haven't found a duckbill choke, was hoping to find someone to machine it. Planned on doing it myself, but switched careers. |
Nobody making them anymore. I used to email Madurski once in awhile to see if he'd start making them again, but no luck. Lost contact a couple years ago. You used to have to send him your barrel to solder on the choke. |

Haven't been able to find any 77Es in my area. However I picked up this Vietnam era shotgun this past weekend. It is a 1969 Remington 870 Wingmaster. It has a 21 inch barrel with a Mod choke and a bayonet adapter. Regards , Joescuba

I like your 870...very nice. I picked up a NIW factory bayonet adapter a couple of years ago and haven't gotten around to installing it yet. After seeing yours, I have new motivation. Don't know if I should place it on one of my 18" or 21" configurations. |

Picked up my Springfield 67F today from layaway from my local gun store (yeah, I know, I'm a cheap bastard putting a $95 shottie on layaway). Going to take it to a local smith next week to see if they can headspace it and also chop the barrel. I was trying to figure out how to remove the foregrip so I can stain it. Is the little screw just forward of the grip the key to removing it or do I have to completely break the gun down? Looks like someone had to do some work on the internals at one point. The drift pin is a little messy and the screw head on the left side of the receiver directly above the safety is buggered some. Incidentally, has no serial number (pre-68 production?). eta: now I can see what work they did. The trigger group, well at least the guard, is not original to the gun. The trigger guard looks newer and the blue on it hasn't gone to the brownish patina the rest of the gun has. |
The trigger guard is not steel, that's why it looks newer. You might be able to take the forend off that way but I would just take the whole thing apart and clean it. In order to take it apart, you need to unscrew the main screw above the trigger, and also tap out the smaller pin to it's front. Then, very carefully pull the buttstock/trigger housing down and out of the receiver. When you do this part, have the gun laying on its right side (ejection port down) that way you won't have the slide lock fall off the trigger pack. Also, watch out for the small wire springs, they like to fall out also. Next, hold the gun upside down, slide the forend to the rear, and disengage it form the bolt and lock plate. Now you can unscrew the mag tube retaining screw at the front. Watch the cap, because the spring will launch it if you don't hold it down. Tip the mag tube up and away from the barrel, and slide the pump handle assembly off the front. Gently unscrew the front cap that holds the wood forend on the tube. |

So, Malikovski, do you think you could replicate another one? BTW, I put a note in the 'Pay it Forward' thread and I'll mention it here. I bought two of the Numrich stocks for the swivels. I'm keeping one of the stocks as I am going to send it to a vendor that does stock cartouches to see if he can replicate it as it's a nice touch. If anyone is interested, they can have the other one for free (it does not appear to have a cartouche and won't have the swivel). Just drop me an IM. |

I am getting near the home stretch. Here is the before picture. I paid $29 for the shotgun with a broken stock.
I chopped the barrel to 20", sandblasted the exterior and used gunkote as a finish. I installed a new bead sight, and used walnut stain on a military stock and the forearm. I then put tung oil on both. I know BLO is more authentic, but I like the results from tung oil better. I still need to make a band for the front sling swivel, and cut a new recoil pad to fit the military stock. 
This has been a really fun project. It makes me want to find another to do all over again! |

Cabella's in Rogers MN. has a 77D with a cross bolt safety and the correct "T" slot recoil pad for $199.
It's in the used shotgun rack in front of the Gun Library. There is a poly choke on it, but that would get cut off anyways.

I got a late start on this shotgun thing...I've been at work for 2 months and just picked up the Stevens 77 last week.Stock doesn't fit. Trigger housing has a 4 or 5 inch extension for the stock bolt. Parts guy said he'd never seen one like this.Op. handle doesn't work unless the release is held in every time.Hard to chamber a round.I've ordered some parts and I have 10 pages of info here. This is gonna be fun!! Should have started with one that works properly. I was thinking of getting another for parts but $40 shipping and $50 for the FFL on top of the price of the gun is to much. Hope I can finish this before I go back to work!!
