Hey all. During the holidays I got a DSA stripped lower receiver. Yesterday I decided to build it up after going thru my parts bin and finding everything I need to complete a lower. When it first showed up I did the usual inspection and it looked pretty good. However when I had it in the bench yesterday I noticed the bottom of the trench seemed awfully thin where the trigger comes thru. I checked my blueprints and this thickness is not listed. I assume because as long as everything else is in spec it would be gtg. Ive never seen the metal so thin in this area. I measured the trench depth and came up with 1.253 in. Spec is 1.249 so it is a tad deep. I measured the thickness of the bottom of the trench at the center of where the trigger comes thru and got 0.054 in. With the thickness of the side "walls" being 0.099 and 0.095 its around half as thick. Im not overly picky. If it works it works but seeing as Ive never seen one this thin I figured I put it out there and see if someone with more knowledge has an opinion on this. All I care about is if it will be safe however my curiosity makes me want to know if this is normal and I've just never noticed on other ARs I've owned. From the angle of the photo it looks good to me. I thought I had an AR in the front closet to check but it is a billet lower 80% I did. Not willing to wake up a sleeping wife to get into a vault in the bedroom for a commercial built to measure. Sorry for the false start. Not that it helps you... I had a mill bit slip loose and I ended up with that area as thin as a soda can. I filled a layer of JB Weld and machined it to spec. That is as close has I have come to ruining an 80%. So far! I have 5 more to do someday. |
So... I find comfort in the fact that if Trump has to work so hard to go to Heaven, then there is a shit load of Democrats that have no f-cking chance to go anywhere but HELL. Sometimes it is entirely appropriate to kill a fly with a sledge-hammer.

.004 is a sheet of paper, not going to make or break anything in this instance. I'd be curious if the rest of the machine work looks on center or if it is low. Front take down pin hole would be one easy place to eye ball it. This would make the situation visibly worse. I can't say I've ever looked at that spot specifically, just how I would start trying to determine if there's actually a cause or if it's just something I've noticed for the first time. |

How much force is ever going to be exerted upon the metal in that area? It's fine. It's basically there to keep crap from getting into the inside of the receiver. |

Thank for the replies everyone. I think this is just a case of me never noticing before or I just never had one this thin before. Either way it doesn't bother me. I was just curious if it could be an issue. When I got home I measured the fcg pin, safety and rear take down hole locations and they are all in spec. In any case I figured better safe than sorry so I should ask. Thanks again all! |
