I have been building on the AR platform for over 15 years now. I have some favorite brands and methods, and some I would like to improve on.

I pinned my first gas block on a custom barrel with an 87 industries kit, and since have bought barrels with pre-drilled roll pin slots. When dealing with Noveske and Daniel Defense, we run into taper pins that do not necessarily always seat well. I have found it crude to smack a taper pin until it is stuck and hope for the best. These often need slightly reamed further I have found if you want to see 50/50 clearance of the pin on either side of the block. Most of the time, You get much less. I am designing a system to ream for taper pins properly, and press fit them in, finding a lbs per inch reading that yields a pin that will not come out, and eliminating the blow from a hammer to provide consistent and fail safe taper pin engagement. Has anyone else worked on this? I will be commencing the first press with a Forward Control Design GBU to prevent the barrel from rolling when pressed, either in or out.

Ream the hole until the small end of the pin is flush, then smack it sharply.  You'll get as close to 50/50 as possible.

excellent advice, I have only been able to drive this pin to where it is about 1/16 out of the other side, no doubt about it, it's in there but I sure do not like the look of it and would prefer a better fit. I have a new reamer that should be arriving tomorrow and hoping to get it to seat slightly further, although at this point, I think I will be refinishing the gas block.

Just so you know, if you want to increase the stick-out by 1/32 inch (0.0313"), the diameter of the hole only increases 0.00065 inch.

Swapping pins around can make a big difference.
