No it's definitely plastic. The whole thing flex's really easy I have a feeling it's a fake of some kind? The spring is really weak also

[1] The base plate is definitely different.

[2] The spring may seem weak because the follower is not anti-tilt.

[3] That is a lot of flex in the video.

[4] Will 5.56x45 rounds fit?
Colt MARS cartridges are 5.56x30mm.
Edit: Not a MARS; they are/were aluminum.

Very interesting. I have never seen anything like that one.  ( as a old man and  I cough dirt )

So this is a good riddle.

Specifically, a "plastic 30rd" magazine that looks like a typical USGI contoured aluminum one.

Could you post some more pics ?  Of the back spline, the front seam, the bag markings ( which keep coming up Windham Weapons , as per the various numbers on it, so maybe it was stored in a spare bag ? )

Also, a side by side pic with a USGI 30rd Alum. mag, looking down on the feed lips.... your plastic mags feed lips "appear" to be "wider".
Maybe even with a few 5.56/.223 rounds loaded into the mag, again just to see the feed lip interaction.

Also, I'd like to point out the different than USGI cut at the bolt hold open point by the follower.

And without breaking it... does the floor plate remove ? Or does it appear the "holding" tabs may have been "melted" into the retainer spots.

Yea it's like a full plastic version. The spring is softer than most click pencils I've seen hahaha. I would hesitant to actually use this. The bag looks like it did not come from the factory like that. It's was resealed.

the feed lips are also much longer.

Thank You for the additional photos !!

I would hold onto that one.

Don't let it go, Lol,... that mag might haunt you for decades.

My only guess would be.... a Training Mag for some kind of ASP training only AR, or a "Non Firing" replica M16 rifle and mag.

It appears well made, and by that I mean not some cheap E-Bay / Far East toy... but something purpose built, by a "respectable" purpose  driven company.

Or maybe some kind of "Hollywood" non-firing prop

Given the "weakness / flexibility" of the mag, from your pics and video... I can't even imagine something like that being used with any kind of Simunitions / Blank round..

Also the weak mag spring isn't gonna put much stress on the feed lips, or be able to reliably push a stack of 30 5.56 loaded rounds.

And BTW, how is the fit , of the mag into a AR lower... LOWER only, NO upper installed...and I'd depress the mag catch...so you don't accidentally break a feed lip or something, or accidentally fubar the mag catch slot on the mystery plastic mag.

I'm curious if it fits snug, or loose.

DO NOT DROP THE HAMMER on the mystery mag while inserted into the lower.

Anyway... thanks for taking the time to share.

I have subscribed to the thread.

Wasn’t there a program or plan for a program for disposable, prefilled, magazines. Maybe this is something like that.
I don't know how this works, but I nominate Joker and Fluffy for arfcom sainthood.

Good point..

The only program that I am aware of , was the Orlite, from Israel / IDF.

And , frankly those mags failed. IMHO, they were only a "thing" because they were available during a High Capacity Mag ban... And something was "better" then nothing.

Uncle Sugar may have had a prefilled disposable magazine trial.

Maybe these are what you are thinking ?

It is a toy magazine for a toy M16.  Probably Japanese in origin.  Since all firearms are banned from civilian hands there is a huge replica market that makes exact replicas of "gun-stuff" right down to packaging, NSNs, and Part Numbers.  These vary from relatively cheap 100% plastic stuff to very high quality die-cast aluminum stuff that could fool you until you pick it up and really look at it.

The "packaging" shows:

[BAR CODE]
100500921504

FSCM 19200 P/N 8448670
MAGAZINE, CARTRIDGE
1 EACH
DAAA09-86-C-0767
11/86

That actually how a proper USGI black follower magazine should be packaged, right down to the correct bar code.  In fact, DAAA09-86-C-0767 is a real contract that delivered 2.2 million magazines over the course of 1986.

In 1966, AAI Corporation of Cockeysville MD was contracted by DA-18-001-AMC-802(x) to develop a disposable plastic magazine and bandoleer.  The idea was to have a pre-loaded 20-round magazines sealed inside a waterproof bandoleers that could be issued in the same manner as the stripper clip bandoleers.  The plastic magazine had to fit the XM16E1 without any modification to the rifle, withstand the same abuse the aluminum could withstand, and the bandoleer must provide sufficient protection to assure the magazines and ammunition was usable after abuse.

The magazine body and follower were fabricated from glass reinforced plastic and it used a standard 20 round CRES spring.  The bandoleer was made from vinyl plastic and heat sealed shut.

Metal lips were considered but rejected as keeping them aligned during overholding would increase the overall cost.

Later the magazine was beefed up as it was now intended to be reusable, but still cheap enough to be disposable.  Such addition as grooves at the back so the stripper clip guide would fit were added to the design, as well as ensuring the spring could not be installed upside-down if the magazine were disassembled for cleaning.

At this point, a plastic magazine is about the same price as the aluminum one, so why change.

There was another contract a year or two earlier with DeBell and Richardson (a plastics manufacturer) to proof the idea that plastic would be strong enough

The pictures of plastic magazines in the link are some of the prototypes made by AAI and others.

Oh, and just one more thing . . .

Contract DAAA09-86-C-0767 was with OKAY Industries and the floor plates were marked as such.
