Old guy eyes, looking for a do-all optic for a 12.5", 5.56 SBR HD rifle. I'll say a max of 200 yards, but realistically a 100 yard shot would be long here.

I'm considering the PA 1X w/green Cyclops reticle. Anyone here using one? Do you find it daylight bright? Up and down sides?

I like the 6MOA green dots on my handgun sights.

I'm in to see what kind of recommendations are given. I've bought at least 3 LPVOs in the last two months based on comments in this forum.

My wife has been complaining about the red dots on her Aimpoint CompM4 and Aimpoint Pro scopes. Her astigmatism is getting worse. So is mine. I'm having trouble with my Aimpoints, too. The red dots look like something from a Rorschach test.

Every time I order something from Primary Arms - about twice a month and I have an order arriving today -  I look hard and heavy at the prism scopes. I just haven't clicked the order box yet. I'm not certain which ones to get.

How do the 1x stack up against the 3x and 5x scopes? How about the GLx prisms? I'm a buy once cry once kind of guy. Although, I'm looking at buying about 3 of them to begin, so money does matter. I plan on possibly moving the Aimpoints to builds that I have underway, and installing some prisms in their places.

Thanks.

I never used the 1x but I have a couple of the 3x prisms. They definitely get daylight bright.

The 3x is Goldilocks for my eyes, I can keep both eyes open and shoot with a target focus for snap shooting between 50 and 100 yards. And I can settle in and use it like a scope for longer stuff.

They have appropriate illumination settings for low light as well.

The glass gets a little dark at dusk. But it’s on par or better than anything in the price point.

Low mounts are an option for non ar guns as well.

They get bright but using that tiny little chevron as a bdc is pointless. Think of it as a reddot with a reticle. I have the 1x, 2x, 3x and out of those only the 3 has a reticle you can actually see beyond just a dot and donut.

The 2x has noticably brighter image than the 3x. I may still have pictures I took through them in my basement trying to show the field of view and what the reticle looked like against a white piece of paper.

Identifying targets without magnification sucks. You mentioned HD....used RDS on patrol rifles and that is fine imho. In situations where you know what is on the receiving end is your target. FF to using a RDS on my Henry last year and I decided I did not like it. I hunt with a dog on a leash and stepping back onto the trail I spotted a few deer about 100 yards away and I could not spot antler or no antlers due to lighting. It would have been very easy with a scope but I had to transition rifle to binos and old onto the dog.

Anyway, I bought a LPVO. Better suited for my purpose. Just something to think about. The RDS might still work for you just fine.

I have two GLx 1x. One with a red reticle and one with a green reticle. Both are daylight bright.

If it was up to me and I was buying one for the first time, I would skip the SLx due to the big knob on the side. I hate that thing. It’s why I got rid of my older Primary Arms optics.

Guys, thanks for your replies.

One concern that I have coming off Aimpoints is the eye relief on prisms. Some of them are over 4". Others are around 2.7", going from memory.

I like my red dot optics mounted as far forward on the upper as I can go without getting onto the rail.

Am I able to mount prism scopes that far forward? All of them? If not, which ones?

Thanks.

For real. I'm considering swapping my two SLX 1x for the GLX 1x for this reason alone.

The more I train, the more I hate that big knob on the side.

The PA 1x microprisms have crazy long eye relief. Realistically it's 7-9 inches if you push it.

I’ve traditionally used the1.5x  mini-ACOGs (have 6 of them).

I’d like to check out the PA micro-prisms. I tried a PA GLX 2x prism a few years ago and couldn’t stand the reticle, so I sold it.

Anybody have experience with mini-ACOGs and the latest PA prisms?

Yeah that knob just bugs me even with two eyes open shooting. Not sure why Primary Arms ever went that. Maybe it was cheaper to do at the time but man the SLx compared to the GLx is dated for just that reason alone. The GLx 2x needs an upgrade too.

I think I have 10 various prisms from PA and an early adopter.  The chevron works fine for me, and the whole ACSS setup.  So its hard for me to understand the gripe about it, or its too busy for them thats the other complaint I read about. Ive shot out to 500 regularly with them.
The green is brighter than red, as far as daylight bright its brighter than the vortex illuminated LVPO's I own.

From what you guys have said, I think this is the Prism I should try.

GLx 1x prism - green

Is this a good choice? I like the purported eye relief gained by this model, and other specs also sound good.

Yes that’s the one you want if you want the green reticle. I own both and both are daylight bright. The green won’t get lost if your environment is also a woodland environment. I’m on the east cost and see no issues with it against trees.

I listed one on the EE with a green reticle.

These also make great carry handle optics and shotgun optics too. They will stand up to the abuse and recoil of a shotgun.

Remember when you get it to adjust the optic to your eyes with the diopter. It’s best to look at a white wall and adjust to your eyes. If you’ve owned an LPVO it’s just like that. Only a way better eye box. Way better. I’m running one on a carry handle A2 rifle. It’s my do all rifle. If the world was ending tomorrow it would be that rifle and the GLx 1x.

The GLx 1x is also a mini Acog footprint so if you want to change the mounts look for mini Acog mounts.

It’s not a busy reticle. I’m just not a big fan of circle/dots or the horseshoe but it works great. I would like to see them out the Aurora reticle in the 1x. The Aurora reticle in my opinion is Primary Arms best reticle.

I need to try one of these GLX 1x. I like horseshoe reticles. I just dropped $1,100 on a TA11 horseshoe. My issue with the GLX 2x, if I remember, was the reticle was too tiny for me to see anything - the 1x appears to fill more of the view.  Does it? Is the picture on the website anywhere close to accurate?

I had this one: Primary Arms GLx 2X Prism Scope - ACSS CQB-M5 Reticle - 5.56 / .308/ 5.45 - AUTOLIVE™

The reticle was stupidly small for me.

I responded to your ad in the EE. Thanks for informing me. I do have a bunch of LPVOs mounted, probably about 10 of them at the moment. I like LPVOs, .

I'm going to put one of these on one of my AR15 pistols and another on one of my wife's pistols. We'll see if this makes her happy. If my wife is happy, I'll get one for all of her AR15s.

I had owned a GLx 2x when they first came out. It felt very small to me too. The knob on the side was also a big let down. The reticle in the GLx 1x and the SLx line are the same size and feel bigger than than the 2x. At this point I’m not sure where the 2x even fits into things. The eye box was also small if I remember correctly. The GLx and SLx 1x have a much better eye box.

Good to hear - since I posted that I've watched quite a few videos on the GLX 1x - reticle seems fine in the videos.

Bummer about the "slightly less than 1x" nature that is prisms - oh well.
I've got PLENTY of places to put this if it won't meet my needs on my ARs.

It makes a great optic for a shotgun. I’m toying with the idea of putting one on a Mossberg 930 project I have. It’s the Home Defense model and I’m adding slug sights to it. I keep debating dot or not dot. If I do go with an optic the GLx 1x will be the one I go with.

It’s perfect for AR’s as well. I don’t like adding all the risers to it. It comes with the lower 1/3 installed. I see no reason to change that mount out. If I went higher I would be looking for a different mount. The extra risers are its weak point.

I bought one of the 1X models first, green reticle.  Thought it was great at the house/out in the yard, back lot, etc.  Took it to the range for a sight in/try out at 25 yds.

Two issues.  First was, without even thinking about it I grabbed some green sight in targets.  Nope.  Real struggle trying to see the green reticle against a target with a lot of green and some black.  Second was I couldn't see the .556 bullet holes in the paper.  Had to dig out the binoculars and switch back and forth during sight in.

I bought one of the 3X flip off magnifiers and put on it.  Better, but it seemed awkward and heavy (the rifle I mean).

I then ordered a 3X green reticle model and have had zero issues with it.  I'd be willing to buy another one for sure.

My wife has a TA44-ACSS and I prefer the SLX-1x to it in 5.56 and 9mm versions. Even the Bushnell Lil-P’ has a better field of view and brighter glass than the ACOG.

Of all their products, Trijicon’s low power prisms are the ripest for a clean sheet redesign.

Reticles will always be “stupidly small” on low power magnified optics… they are scaled to the target, not your eyeball preferences.

Got in my GLX 1X. Am playing with mounting locations on a rifle.

Are you guys running this pretty close to your eye (lined up with the charge handle) or further forward towards the handguard?

Benefits to both, really cannot decide.

Wish this thing came with a bikini lens cover or a cover like an ACOG.

So far it looks really good - glass is pretty good for what a 1x needs to be. Definitely immediately noticed the not quite 1x, but I think it’s workable.

Reticle is razor crisp and the illumination is great. Appreciate the larger tube diameter.

Thing looks absolutely goofy on its mount. Wish there was an aftermarket 1.7-1.8” mount for mini-ACOGs. I’d like to ditch this mount.

Mount it like a red dot. Use as a red dot. I typically run my red dots more to the middle of my receiver over the ejection port.

Mine came with a rubber bikini cover. I have the MI QD mount PA 1.93 adapter but I can’t quite remember which combination I used to get to the height I have it at, somewhere between 1/3 and 1.93.

Serious?! I need to have PA send me a bikini cover!

Do you have pics of your mount setup? I ordered the 1.9” riser from PA a few nights ago. It just shipped today.

From PA support today:

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Primary Arms. We apologize for the inconvenience in this matter. The manual for the GLx 1x microprism incorrectly states that this optic includes a bikini cover. However, this is not included with this optic. At this time, we do not have one available that is compatible with the GLx 1x microprism scope.
We apologize for the confusion in this matter. Have a wonderful day!

American Defense Manufacturing has QD mounts in various heights for the mini ACOG/micro prism footprint, I have 2 or 3 of the PA 3x micros mounted on them and they have been solid

Use a can coozy, roll the opening to double or adjust the height. Cheap and you probably have a cabinet full.

They also work great to pop over scope knobs

Do you have pics of your mount setup? I ordered the 1.9” riser from PA a few nights ago. It just shipped today.

Maybe I’m confused and only the 3x came with a bikini cover.

Yep I’ll get some this week. I think the ADM QD mounts are better FWIW. I wouldn’t purchase an MI again. Lockup looked the same but it just doesn’t fit any of my picatinny rails right. It’s either too loose or too tight.

This:

..actually works halfway decent as a GLx 1x cover. A little small, but easily stretches to cover it and has a nice loop handle.

... The GLx 1x is also a mini Acog footprint so if you want to change the mounts look for mini Acog mounts.

Please share your carry handle mount setup. Need a new lightweight, 1x, smaller carry handle optic for my new 300blk Kitty Kat.

I agree with the posts here. This unmagnified reticle is mostly unusable, as it was designed to be used. Makes a good chevron type aiming point, for my eyes anyway.

Like most people say, needs a magnifier or try the 3x option. But personally, not ready to live with the added size/weight of a flip magnifier on a small rifle/SBR/pistol, particularly sitting high on a carry handle. Have never experienced the size/weight of PA's 3x.

Just adding to this - ADM QD mounts are rock solid and return to zero extremely well. It's the best bang for the buck, by far.

This 1x has a very specific role for me and that is purely 300BLK HD. I’ve got magnified optics on every other rifle I have.

If I have to go outside, I’m grabbing a different rifle, lol.

I love my mini-ACOG 1.5x optics, but I find the 1.5x and tiny “tunnel” less than ideal for HD distances (50yd and under) - just slower.

I’ve used tons of ADM’s mounts in the past and bought an AD-B5-TL to use with the GLx 1x - we’ll see if the height agrees with me (should get here tomorrow.)

I tried the PA 1.93” spacer on the stock PA mount and I found it a little too high for me. I could probably adjust to it, but when I shoulder the gun fast and naturally, I’m always lined up just a bit low on the reticle.

I’m just using the mounts that PA supplied and the nut you have to buy from them too.

I used to use a 3x on the supplied carry handle mount using an ACOG screw on a 733 clone.  Worked rather well.  I didn’t care for the height so I put a flat top receiver on the gun cuz with aging eyes fuck irons anyway.  I’m a big ACOG fan and for beater guns I feel the 3x prism is hard to beat.

The Trijicon TA44 1.5x16 ACOG is definitely daylight bright. I highly recommend that, along with either the ACSS or 5.56 RTR reticle, if you'd consider that over the PA 1x GLX.

We apologize for the confusion in this matter. Have a wonderful day!

That rubber bikini probably won't last a few seasonal changes before the rubber gives up. Should look for one of the new 3d printed caps that are held on my bungee cords. Then just put a ziptie over the optic to retain the bungee cords  and the caps stay connected to the optic.

@MARSH1 thanks for jumping in. Do you know if this is something we could get back into the product?

Also, what are the chances this would be close to fitting? (It’s the only à la carte bikini you sell)

Part of the challenge is on the objective side, there’s no lip around the objective lens on these. The mount edge is flush with the edge of the objective, so any sort of cover would have to sit inside the objective to stay on, which is why a rubber bikini custom-made for this is the real answer. Even a neoprene scope coat has nothing to grab around on the front.

Here's my .02 cents.

I bought a SLX 1x with Green ACSS reticle originally to put on a 9mm PCC. Today however, I moved it to a AR pistol with Maxim brace. Shooting at 50 yards in a somewhat dimly lit indoor range.

The Good....eye relief and eye box is pretty good. Much better than an ACOG 4x but not as forgiving as a true red dot. Not sure why. Daylight bright. Size and weight are outstanding.

The Bad...the screws that come with this are shit. Replace them immediately. The big Torx on the pic mount started to strip and sent my Fix-It-Stick into the side of a new MPX scratching the receiver. The screws that hold the mount together will strip if you torque them to manufacturer recommendations. Ask me how I know. My optic is now permanently attached to the mount and will forever be at it's current height. . The eyepiece on mine was so tight it could not be adjusted by hand. I had to put duct tape around the eyepiece and use pliers to loosen it. Still, it is very difficult to adjust by hand and now I have a nice shiny scratch on the ring to indicate the proper eye-piece placement. The reticle is tiny and all but useless for BDC. Range estimation maybe, but it would have been better if the range marks were actually bullet drop indicators like on the ACOG.

Honestly, I think I prefer the Trijicon MRO-HD or any fiber optic ACOG. Yes, having an etched reticle so that your weapon is still functional when your battery goes down is a good thing...but again, the reticle is so small it would still be hard to pick up. Even a cheap red dot with BUIS would likely be a better solution.

I've kind of come to a personal conclusion that the PA micro-prisms are kind of a waste of money. I'm regretting buying mine, but I'll keep it because given the QC problems and poor quality hardware nobody else is going to want it!

^^ Interesting, my eyepiece turns fine and I never really planned on running that stock hardware - just looked like cheap cast powder metal stuff.

My AD-B5-TL came in tonight and got it mounted up fine at a 1.70” centerline height.

Do you really need BDC at a non-mag 1x? You don’t get that in a red dot, why would you in a 1x prism?

I will say it’s not 100% perfect looking through it - a bit of distortion and slight fish-eye, and the body certainly doesn’t ‘disappear’, but neither do my many 1.5x mini-ACOGs.

Ultimately, we really really need a refresh of the ACOG line, including a true 1x with a large objective and ocular, with typical crazy good, clear Trijicon glass.

PA will probably send you a new mount. FWIW, I have a lot of the same issues with the 1x micro, I tried to like it and it's useable but I find it to be very meh. The 2x Glx and 3x Slx are both awesome, in my opinion.
