MODS: Don't move this to GD.  Just like every other AR/M4 clone thread it belongs here in Tech.  You moving this the last time resulted in the typical GD nonsense

So the original thread was archived so I'm recreating it since it was such a cool thread.

Same, somewhat surprised. I wonder if certain teams are using them or if it's a gear selection made at the agent level?

They may be the designated "suppressive fire" dudes

My guess to break contact and provide covering fire so PPD can whisk the POTUS away.

That’s why they probably don’t use suppressors on them. They want it loud.

Apart from the rail, are their any significant differences between the two models? Forgive me, I'm not a KAC nerd. Is one model being phased out in favor of the other? When I look on KAC's website I'm only seeing them offering the newer Mlok models now.

Their original 14.5 SR's had NT4 hiders, but still no NT4s.

PR optics have always been a top agency priority, which is my guess why cans still aren't standard. CAT's helmets and plate carriers were first issued sometime over the the last decade or so. Change is slow over there.

That's odd especially since they are a counter assault team. You'd think they would be geared up with all necessary items.

You'd think. Apparently there's new blood running the firearms program, so they should be caught up to the 21st century eventually.

Or they realize the funds would be better spent elsewhere within the agency? Having a unit like that as a deterrent or "in case of emergency" is a great contingency, however with little to no call outs or real world operations to justify said expenses, I would think it gets to a point of diminishing returns. Hence, maybe funds could be better well spent/allocated.

That last photo with the side mounted Safariland mag pouch. I have never seen anyone using it like that before. See's weird to get a speed reload that you'd have to pull away instead of conventional straight up or canted.

Huh.

I've got an extra, maybe I should try it out to see if I am missing something.

Maybe. Given the team's priority it's likely a matter of optics and/or internal politics in this case. They have plenty of pricey toys.

I'm certain the topic has been kicked around more than once. Again, old school thinking can be slow to change over there.

I would think it's in the Secret Service's plan for their SBR's to be loud. If someone ever has to engage a hostile the gunfire will be heard by all.

This would alert everyone to the direction of the immediate threat and place the entire team on high alert.

Suppressors are heavier to lug around all day, so there's that.

Yeah I know cans are cool but I'm thinking they aren't going for some high speed assault. If these guys are shooting chances are they want it to be loud.

I'm sure the vehicle weapons are on a whole other level as far as the guys in black suits.

For the guys running ear muffs, not having suppressors isn't a big issue in terms of communications.

For the guys without, suppressors would let them communicate.  Even with the in ear buds, those SBRs are going to be too loud to hear radio traffic.  Never mind shouted coordination.

I was gonna mention that, but didn't wanna start down the "but most Tier 1 units use both" rabbit hole.

Looks like one Surfire 60 rounder in there too. After dropping one and it spewing all of the ammo out like a fountain I decided a 30 round PMAG was just fine.

Certainly don't blame you. With how finicky everyone reports the various coffin mags and drums as being, I just don't see enough benefit over a 30 round mag with plenty of spares.

From my experience toting a rifle around for a living, the extra weight is felt pretty quickly too. I'd rather have a lighter more comfortable setup than have an extra 20 or 30 rounds before reloading.

I've only run into one Surefire mag in the Army - one of my Infantry officers, who carried a 60-rounder with him in eastern Afghanistan as a platoon leader in the 101st and still had it as a company commander. He said it always worked perfectly for him. He would have been using it in Afghanistan in the 2011-2013 timeframe, I think, so I believe that would have made it their original design, which I always heard had reliability issues. As far as the weight goes, he's a beast who was a bouncer and MMA fighter before joining the Army, so I doubt he noticed it.

Wild guess: .gov didn't buy them; the user added it.  Contrary to popular ARF belief, most people, even the pros, aren't willing to spend $400+.....for a flashlight.

The fact that so many have the same light is a pretty good indicator that they are indeed issued.
