The real KAC front sight gas blocks are seen from time to time for sale.  One sold this week on the EE for $550, I hope someone on here got it. Granted it was only up for like 4 min!

and my first page ownage, I guess I will have to post a pic of my still in progress without the barrel parts when I get home.

I agree that that Colt option seems like the better plan, I don't think it would be that hard to make it into a functional gas block either.  I'll let you know in a few days, I just ordered one.

Even when they were making these flip up gas blocks, I seem to remember they still weren't very easy to get a hold of.  I only have mine because I took it off a KAC rifle back in the day when I was stupid.  Who says stupid doesn't pay off.

Actually, I think they could of got a lot more if they wanted to.  I wouldn't be surprised if one went for $700.

Mine was NIB for $475, and I did not hesitate.

Damn thats a bit steep.  Has me rethinking the whole SAM-R rifle I'd like to build or at the very least some close enough FSGB.

So I was able to get the ball rolling on the gas block.

Biggest part was figuring out where and how to drill the hole for the gas to enter the gas tube.

I was able to find some blue prints of a gas block and using that, helped me determine where to drill the hole.  Thankfully the gas block already had a hole for the gas tube roll pin so I was able to use that as a reference point.

After some thought and lack of a small enough right angle drill, I decided it would be easiest for me to go from the top down, rather than try and drill from the bottom.

I didnt get a picture of it but I essentially made a template of the above gas tube hole spacing (taken from the blue print) and just taped it over the flat portion of the gas block and drilled all the way through.

With the gas tube inserted you can *kind of* see how the holes line up.

The second phase of this project will be to determine how I am going to secure it to the barrel. I do not want to have it pinned in hopes of coming across a legit FSGB so I am left with securing it with set screws. This presents a new challenge as one, albeit very small (1.5mm) has already been drilled and tapped. I think I may drill a second one behind it and possibly one down (or up depending on how you have the gas block oriented) through the bayo lug. There looks to be plenty of material on either side of it so it may be my best bet there.

Im hoping to try this out sometime in the near future. Im thinking that as long as the GB is properly secured to the barrel there shouldn't be any issues. The gas pressure from the barrel will be limited to the gas tube and will have minimal interaction with the block. The springs and the detents for the front sight portion seem to be sturdy enough to withstand the recoil of a .223.

Looking at blueprint.  Couldn't you just drill through the screw hole on the bottom.  I looks like it's on the same line.

I could have but the screw hole does not line up in the middle of the gas tube hole. In the blue print it does but on the gas block I used the screw hole is off set in a way that it would be at the very tip of where the gas hole needed to be. If I had a drill press I may have been able to go that route but all I have is a cordless and that would have been difficult to accomplish.

Ill keep you updated on its feasibility. Just make sure to get either the G&P or VFC branded ones should you decide to snag a few.

Ok, so I got the Colt front sight and have some pictures comparing it to the KAC. It isn't exact and doesn't flip up by spring action, but it's close.  Spent about 30 minutes turning it into a functioning gas block.  The material isn't steel it's aluminum; that part I'm not too sure about.  I've installed a lot of gas blocks, but no aluminum ones, so maybe someone with more experience than me can chime in about their reliability.  Assuming everything is safe I'll put it on a barrel and put a few hundred rounds through it this weekend.

I'm good at a few things, but taking photos isn't one of them, so bare with me.

How did you drill the hole for the gas port? Were you able to drill from the bottom? After looking at the GB some more it looks like the little set screw hole can be used.
2/6/2016 12:53:16 AM EDT
[#15]
Yes, I drilled through the bottom lug.  I then drilled a bigger hole and threaded the hole for some 10-22 set screws.  Tomorrow I'll do a couple of mag dumps and see how it holds up under some pressure.  I'll also bang it around to see if it moves when doing so.  I'll approach this from a skeptical view, hoping to be pleased, but expecting to be disappointed.

First of all, I hope this is the right place to do this, but I think this is one of the cooler clones and since so few people can do this because of the flip-sight I thought it was.

OK, after a four hour range trip I've done some testing out the Colt knock of Flip-up front sight.

So I attached the sight to a 10.5 barrel I'm getting ready to replace as shown below.  I only attached it with the one set screw, I didn't pin it on.

</a>" />

Ammo: Monarch 55gr Steel Case.  It's pretty under-powered stuff, I've had guns that just don't like it.  My first SR-15 wouldn't shoot it very well at all, and this upper has struggled with it from time to time, I think it's the size of the gas port.

Results:  The first 5 shots didn't work.  They moved the bolt back, but only half way.  I didn't lube the bolt so put some lubrication on and switched out an H buffer for a regular buffer and the next 15 shots fired fine, though the bolt never locked back.  In fairness I'm pretty sure this is an ammo gas port diameter issue, not a gas block issue.  Next I did a mag dump with two mags.  Other than not locking back the bolt it went just like it should.  The barrel got hot, I stuck a meat thermometer in the barrel and it read 260, I don't know how good of a test that is, but I could feel the heat coming off of it.  The gas block stayed on just fine and after the mag dump was still on solid with just the set screw.

Personal Impressions:  The block did much better than I thought it would, it didn't give me any major problems and worked just like a gas block should.  I do think that if you decide to tackle this project that it needs to be pinned on with taper pins.  I personally wouldn't worry about it being on a rifle like a Sam-r because they aren't really guns that you abuse.  The problems I did have I think are primarily the ammo and the gas port diameter.  If I were going to permanently attach this sight to the barrel I used today I would open up the port just a bit, but that is a barrel issue not an issue from the gas block.  Finally, in a change from earlier in the week I would trust this gas block with some exceptions.  I wouldn't trust it to run multiple mag dumps on full auto.  It might work, and pinned I would bet that it would, but that seems to be pushing it.  Being aluminum I'm also not sure how well it might do in a Lone Survivor style fall, but if you have such a fall I'm not sure that a gas block moving a thousandth of an inch to the left is really going to be your problem.   Anywho, this was a fun project and just thought that I would post the results.

Thanks for the report Chenault. Looks like we may have a temporary stand in for the FSGB. More testing will need to be done to see how they hold up longer term. I'm hoping to take mine out this week and see how it does. I'll be sure to report my results.

I paid $600.00 for mine and it was used...I was also hell bent on putting one of these together too so depends on the buyer. A used one sold recently on the EE for 550.00.

I don't know...I am guessing $500 to $600 from what I've seen in the past. Personally, I am going to use a GG&G AR Bolt On Flip Up Front Sight Gas Block System has a substitute until I can find a deal on the KAC front sight. I still need to find a damn KAC FF Rail, too. These USMC SAM-R clones are a PITA to source the correct parts for!

Here is the GG&G Front Sight. It'll work in a pinch.

I am thinking of using the White Oak Armament SDM-R barrel. Anybody have opinions on that.

I think I've reached the point that if I want to build a SAM-R clone/near clone for the 2016 shooting season that I need to pick a "Plan B" front sight.  Is there concensus or do we want to start another thread?  I'm leaning toward a non-pinned version so that I can preserve the option for a pinning of a KAC unit if it ever comes available.  But I'm open to others thoughts on that.

Waiting on a norgon ambi, some shims for a NT4 fh and a bipod.  Oh and a padded sling because good lord at the weight of this thing already.

Yeah, the padded MK2 definitely helps, but it's still hefty.

Got the handguard ring yesterday. Also for those who have asked where I sourced the ring I pulled it off an old DD M4 7.0 rail I found off Gunbroker.

Hmm. I have an old 7.0...

No need for shims, the SAM-R uses a standard A2 flashhider. The whole suppressed SAM-R thing really has to stop, it was never used in that capacity. Wikipedia is often incorrect, and is so in this regard. Same with the ARMS #17 mount for the bipod, it used a KAC Bipod Stud. Anyway, good luck with your build,

Funny you mention that, I had the same discussion with a local dealer here over the weekend who said the same thing. You can see in my pics that I went with the standard birdcage and the KAC bipod stud. Still, a NT4 is on my short list of suppressors so I may use one on the SAM-R at some point but I'm leaving it as is for now.
