Anyone try dying an ETS clear mag yet?
ETS AR Mag I have seen some pics of the clear Ruger 10/22 mags being dyed and was curious about the ETS. I have some ETS Glock mags and an AR mag coming and may try the AR mag, but figured the hive here may have already given it a shot. I need to get some more mags for my wife's purple AR that she got last year, but keep slacking off on doing so. I was thinking a couple purple tinted ETS mags might be a good follow up gift for this year. |
I used powdered Pearl Grey RIT dye to dip these mags. Had to use the whole packet in 3 qts of water . Dipped them for about a minute or two..

I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.

Ok so I finally made myself some time to start some mags especially after rollback was kind enough to share his method.
I decided to start with using the liquid tangerine dye to make orange colored mags. From left to right: 1. 1.5 gals of water at 170-180 and about one third bottle of dye 30 mins 2. Same water but added 2 tbl spoons of dye. 30 mins 3. Same water but added 2 tbl spoons of dye. 30 mins 4-6 all done at the same time, added 4.5 tbl spoons of dye. Approx 45 mins I did stir them and flip them on occasion. The mag covers have a couple of spots that didn't take the dye well and there is a spot or two on some of the first three mags that are not even. 
I am going to do blue next some time this week. |

I didn't leave them in very long. About 2 minutes, tops.
The floor plates took a reddish tint in a few spots. I did them first, I don't think the water was quite hot enough yet. |

I finally got around to trying to dye some sand pmags. The only Rit Dye colors i could find tonight was apricot orange and super pink. I used 2 gallons of water @ 170* and i used a Nyquil medicine cup to measure the dye 20 ml to 2 gal. Put 2 mags along with base plates and caps in water for 10 minutes rotating everything every few minutes and looking at the color.

I tried this as well this weekend to match Magoul pink. Couldn't find the super pink Al used and could only find Fuchsia.
I did two cap fulls to 2qt of water for 6 min. Color is definitely not a match, too much red in the dye I think. Or maybe only 5 min soak time. Hope this helps someone. If I get my hands on the super pink and some more sand mags I'll try again.

I am going to do blue next some time this week. I did 20 in a Homer bucket with a full bottle of tangerine RIT dye and 180-ish degree water. 45m, stirring often, they turned out very nice. It's obvious they're not a factory dye/color with a few spots where the dye didn't quite take as well as it could have, but I am very happy with the results. |

Scarlet Red Scarlet Red One tip I saw on the Rit site was to dip a paper towel in your solution to see the color of your solution (so you can set the lightness/darkness) |

The guy who was matching the ACR coyote brown claims he just used tan and checked it every 30 seconds till it matched. Going to try tomorrow just need to find a bottle of tan in stock. One Walmart I checked earlier didn't carry that color.
ETA: I got an exact coyote ACR match with 4 tablespoons of tan, 1/2 tablespoon dark brown in 16 cups of water heated to 170. At 7 minutes my tester was a perfect match. |
I dyed one forest green I really like it. I used Kellys green on a sand magazine. It came out like a bright grass green. I liked it but it was a little too bright. I then used black rit dye to darken it up.
I also have one that's a midnight blue but I don't have a picture right now. |
