Hi, I am new to this hobby and just built my first AR15. I took it out yesterday to break in the barrel and noticed while cleaning it after there was little brass pieces in it. I then inspected the brass and found that the extractor was chewing some of them up. Not all of them. Not sure what I can do to fix this. The gun seems to shoot good no issues other than that. Ejection pattern is roughly 4 o’clock when I have the blast shield screwed on the brake and 3 o’clock when it is off. Any idea what might be causing this? Thanks for the info for posting pictures and for fixing them! So I was looking through the brass again and noticed all the ones that had a burr was Winchester 62GR M855. All the other ammo I shot that day did not have it. So I then went and sorted through some brass I had shot through my other gun. I found the same thing. All the Winchester M855 ammo had that burr. The other 6 brands I shot that day did not have it. I then went and chambered a few of those by hand. This did not create the burr. So it must be happening when it is fired. It seems like the casing must rotate a little bit when it’s clamped in the bolt to create this. I also see a double mark and a slight burr from the ejector pin as well. I should note I see that double mark from the ejector pin on the other ammo I shot that day as well but no burr from it on that ammo. |

Seems to be ammunition related, however, you can debur/dress the sharp edges on the extractor without changing the working surface. Also, the case head has an ejector swipe. Soft brass, maybe higher pressure, sharp ejector head. If not reloading, run it. Looking at the pictures, it's either shadow or the case body seems enlarged. Measure the cartridge base and up the body, compare against new and other brands. |
